whats going on with it?

Im just worried that it may one day die and i will lose 6.3GB of Data, 2.3GB of downloads
.4GB of Pics .6GB of Text Documents .7GB of MP3's 2.0GB of Half-Life Including Mods Screenshots Utils and scripts. and .3GB of a ton of other stuff incluing HTML Javascripts (thanks to beemer) and Misc stuff

this is embarrassing (what's new) but for you I'm going to admit it. My hard drive was making a weird, (non screeching) noise.
The sound almost like you get when something like a book lands on the keyboard, and you don't pick it up right away...... but it was intermittent. Mine quit when I plugged the keyboard into the keyboard spot and put the mouse back into the mouse spot. Had them reversed.
dooh!!!

I only Have Right Now a 5.99GB hdd and another 5.99GB hdd (which is in my dads computer) I have no where to put my stuff My dads gonna buy me a 30GBhdd and another 10GB for backup or maybe Bigger. I told Hime If the Hard Drive Does Fail Before I get a new one I will NEED to get all my data BACK and that means... $300-$900-Maybe more!!! Per GB to get back. I think I scared him that I told Him I had a 8gb drive. and its better to buy a new drive now than it is to wait.

what im scared about is He wont buy a new hdd till one fails http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

So its not a grinding noise?? if it is a grinding noise sounds like your drive is going out of you.

I had a Seagate 6.4gb hd for a few months when it died.I sended it back and I can expect the new one to arrive very soon.It made all those weird sounds. It sometimes didn't respond for a few secs and then suddenly made a strange sound and started working again.I started to get errors,Windows had trouble booting.Until it didn't anymore at all.I saved all the necessary data on a 2gb hd.It took a few hours to format it,because it tried to 'repair' the bad sectors. When I started scandisk after that,1/3 of the surface was filled with the evil, red B's...

If I were you I would take the hd out and only use it once again to back-up the data when you have a harddrive to put it on.

Although a noisy hard drive could be caused from anything, including the brand of the hard drive, one thing that you should check just to make sure that it is not a problem that could be fixed, is that the drive was put in correctly. A friend of mine had a hard drive that was noisy and eventually the drive failed. He had the computer built at a supposedly reputable computer place, with a technician who had worked at IBM. However, when he went to replace the hard drive, he found out that they had only put two screws on one side of the drive to hold it in, and the drive could have failed due to vibration. He also found that they had put the cables in backwards and also had some other of the power connectors done wrong. Certified technicians built this computer, and it is worth checking into to try to prevent drive failure.

"Reputable" technicians usually means someone recommended them. In this case, it sounds like they were just "certified" technicians, which means they have a piece of paper saying so, and in alot of cases, it's not worth the paper it's written on.
I don't understand how someone could hook up cables backwards and not notice. They sound like idiots. People often mistake "certified" for "they know what they're doin!" In my shop, there are people who have NO certification whats-so-ever and they make some of our "certified" people look like morons!

David Duchovny, when asked about his degrees from Harvard and Berekely (I think):
"No matter how smart you think you are, there will ALWAYS be someone out there with a grade ten education or less who knows alot more than you do"

So true!
