Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : EDO Ram & SDRAM together???
hello,
I'd would like to know if its possible for my mobo to use both EDO Ram & SDRAM. This mobo has 2 DIMM slots and 4 SIMM slots.
I have yet to figure out the What,WHen,WHo kinda things for this mobo. I'm trying upgrade the BIOS and so far it can be 1 of 5 mobo manufacturers/models... (aarrrgghhh!!)
Sooner or later I'll figure it out. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Consult your motherboard manual -oops I guess you don't have one. My guess is this is a socket7 motherboard -yes? As for mixed kinds of memory e.g. EDO and SDRAM - probably not going to work... if you mean the same kind of memory e.g. EDO in both SIMMs and DIMMs it may be possible.

Normally mixing DIMMS and SIMMS will smoke the DIMMS on a socket 7 board, but there are a few boards that do allow it, i would D/L a manual for the board B4 i tried it.

My second pc will allow the mix. Except the first two simm slots must be empty and I have to re-jummper the mobo a little.
Updateing the Bios "probably" has little to do with adding ram.
Seems like I've seen that there is a site that will tell you who made the mobo by using the FCC numbers on the mobo.
I used both 72 pin EDO ram and 168 pin sdram on my ol M717 board and it never had a problem. It's definitely not recommended, and even after it had been running for months people told me it could NOT be done, it definitely is possible. All I had to do was leave one of the two 168 pin banks empty.

Yup, it can be done.
I did it on a PC-Chips, had 1-64MB DIMM and 2-16MB SIMMs with a AMD K6-2/500 and all worked well...really.
Only one way to find out, give it a go, you arent risking much except a no-boot situation.

hey i did that setup with my old amd 200 system. It worked fine, but i dont remember what motherboard it was. I had 128mb sdram and had 64mb of edo ram. Booted up the system and it read 192 memory.

Had a GA-586TX2 that allowed for both sdram/edo ram. up to 192mb mixed or 256 with just edo.
