SONY VAIO- best place

My friend is looking to buy SONY-Vaio lap computer... He saw one for around $2500 with: 1.7 ghz and 40 Gigabyte hard disc memory. He says he wants it for watching DVDs and simple editing of home movies. The resolution of 16.1" screen is important to him too. I suggested a Desktop but he wants a laptop... either way $2500 seems a bit high, no? COuld someone tell me where to look for the best deal on either this system or what he could REALLY get for $2500 on a laptop. :)
