If you don't care about the files on WIN XP, I would just perform a full install of WIN 98 - re-formatting the drive. Then again, if you want to keep those files and there are too many for floppy - you can pick up a pair of LAN cards, a Crossover cable, and transfer the files to another pc.
I think most people would agree when I say a full install is problably the best way to go when installing another OS.

Since you want to go back to Win98 you will need to format your harddrive in FAT32 format. Win98 does not support NTFS. The best way to do this is boot the Win98 floppy or CD, at the command prompt, key in FORMAT C: (if the C drive is the drive in question), and then begin installation.
Hope this helps!:D

Well, if you are sure there are no disk errors, then you can just type: FORMAT C: /Q
This will perform a quick format, skipping the 'scan disk' portion which takes up the majority of the time when performing a format.
You can also do:
FORMAT C: /U /Q
If you use the /u switch, this will perform an 'unconditional' format. If I am not mistaken, an unconditional format will actually 'zero' out your drive and totally wipe out any data on it.

[Simple:
Set your bios to start with a boot disk (can be Windows start disk, disk manager, whatever, as long as it contains boot information.
Run fdisk or disk specific software to remove partitions and disk units.
Re-partition your disk in FAT32 file system (for W98SE or higher, not NT4).
Format your partition(s) and CONFIG
DONE

Well, one you FDISK and FORMAT you will be wiping out the file system completely.
When you FDISK, use a WIN98 boot disk.
How to Use the Fdisk Tool and the Format Tool to Partition or Repartition a Hard Disk (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q255867)
Once you get FDISK, and FORMAT all done, just run: D:\SETUP
This should get you into the setup of WIN98

Very important
If you have an NTFS partition, you cannot format with FAT32..
The only way is to delete this partition.
you can convert from FAT32 to NTFS but YOU CANNOT from NTFS to FAT 32.

You can always do what i did and jus crack XP it's simple and no hassle from microsoft but there's a uninstall back up in XP that lets you uninstall XP and go back to the original OS that you had in the previouse (sorry for the spelling) state and original configuration and walla no formatting no lost files and back to the original computer you had if that works the congratulations
