Hey guys! I ordered today a DVD/CDRW combo drive from Toshiba (like for $180.00) and I was wondering if the drive is as good as it sounds. I have read some reviews , which were very good, but I wanted to know what you guys think!
Also, the drive comes with a software DVD player.
My system specs are:
AMD K6-2 500
128 PC100 ram
Voodoo 3 2000 PCI vid/c
etc etc
Will the player run smooth on my system? I wont be doing any multitasking or anything, just watch the movies. Will the video be choppy or what ????
Thanks in advance!

Hope that software player is Cyberlink's PowerDVD 'cause that is the ultimate software DVD player on the market. I use it on my 500MHZ AMD, 128MB ram and SB Live Value machine and those movies just rock.

I couldn't believe that those guys canceled my order, but guess what?.. I ordered the same drive again on the 20th and got it yesterday... and all I can say is.. WOW!!!
No coasters have surfaced, everything is going alright but I still haven't toyed around with the DVD player. The unit came with Cyberlink's PowerDVD.
Who uses this software player and how does it performs for you>????
Also, how do I manage to have the music cd's with the same volume level? Some are higher others lower, etc????
Any help or comment will be appreciated..!!
Thanks.

As I posted earlier, I use Cyberlink's Power DVD. Just make sure that you are using Ultra DMA cables on your drives (DVDrom and hard drives) and every thing should be ok. Make sure the DVDrom DMA property is checked in the device manager. Playback should be very smooth, if you don't try to push your video card beyond its limits.

My experience with PowerDVD has not been stellar. I've installed it on both my systems, It wouldn't work on my K6-111 @366 and it gave me a lot of illegal operations on my brand new Tbird 1 Gig system. However WINDVD worked flawlessly on both systems. I get the impression that power dvd is optimised for intel chipsets, although I may be wrong.

Do you get smooth DVD playback? In my experience with my K6-3 450 (not the plus) I had lag and pauses in the DVD playback with a slightly older Tosh DVD-rom.
Hope it plays well.

I use PowerDVD 2.5 and get superb perfomance. It`s nevre jumpy or laggy. I use it on a P3@500, 650mb ram, Voodoo 3.
Actually, I used to have a Celeron 333 about a 6 months ago, and playback on that was perfect too!
2 different mobo`s, but both had Intel chipsets. Maybe your right, it might well be optimized for Intel Chipsets.
All I can say is, PowerDVD has certainly been the best player I`ve used on my systems. But you know how things work with computers! Something will work great for one person, but not another!
Anyone got PowerDVD 3 yet? What`s it like, what new features etc....

I don't get smooth playback on my machine, but I think it's because I have standard IDE cables!
I have to get UATA (DMA) Cables and see if it makes a diference. I am hoping they will because the video is all jumpy, like if it was dropping frames or something.!!

I'm using Power DVD with my Athlon 800MHz and a Guillemot Xtentor Maxi Gamer card and it runs as smooth, clear, and crisp as can be! There are no lags, sags, drags, distortions, or blips! Not sure why the rest of you running AMD processors are having problems. Could be the 800MHz/Video card combo, or maybe the running 98Lite.
