I hope someone can help me (doctors gave up).

I guess to start from the beginning is good.

Somone asked me to install Professional Home Builder Suite... so I did. I installed the prog and then it told me that I had to install Acrobat 4.0 and if there was any problem with 3.0 then 4.0 would have to be reinstalled. (problem, it was like 11:00 pm and X-mas Eve and I could barely stand up or say my name)

I thought it said that I needed to uninstall 3.0 and the prog and reinstall it. (LOL! god what an idiot). To make matters worse when it asked me to confirm the uninstallation of some shared files or some sh** I hit yes to all (LOLLIN like hell). Then I rebooted after doing so and then put 4.0 in and then the prog and about half the way through the insatll I got and I/O error while creating a file (or something)? So I know that has to be a device driver because it is not bad insatll software cause it loaded in just fine the first time. I also got it to load on several other pcs afterwards. So I copied the disc on the harddisk and uninstalled Acrobat 4.0 and the prog again. then put 3.0 back in and then rebooted and then put 4.0 back in then rebooted then tried to install the software off the harddisk instead of off the cd. It went all the way to the end and then it gave me an error that I did not have enough disk space to create the file. ????What???. there is plenty of room. So I went changed it to network server added an old 16meg chip installed DX7 then installed the updated video drivers uninstalled the prog and then rebooted.
Tried it again!
All I got was the same I/O error I got before... Grrrrrrrrrr!
I thought SCREW IT!
Restore and take 95 off the **** thing and put 98 SE on it.
Backed up some files and did just that.

NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grumble Grumble Grumble ......!

Windows installs fine No problem.

I tried to get online to get the newest drivers. I work for an ISP so I manually configed DUN and tried to connect. No modem found so I installed the modem drivers and then uninstalled the com2 then rebooted.
It found the modem and installed it to com2, but while booting it came up with several other unknown devices (Great!!!).
To add to it it was a pieced together piece of @#$%!!!! The shop where they built it went out of business. I guess building junk would do that!
Anyway when I got back into windows I uninstalled all the (other devices) and then removed all the ports and multimedia junk and rebooted with a disk that I found I think for the mother board (PC100 with PCsilin (or something I found drivers matching what dll"s it asked for in the driver files of the disc. Installed all the drivers except 1 PCI Serial controller. Looked on the 98SE and on the PC100 disc (searched like every **** folder till my eyes got blurry and hard to read he **** screen). (Glad I had no explosives, might have been dangerous to be around)
I tried to get online and it gives me error 630 and that means it is not able to access my modem. The drivers I have in there are the same drivers I installed before and kicked ***.
I thought ICW might be the problem (I don't know hoping it was anything by this point)
No Good.
So I guess my only answer would be that it must be something with the PCI Controller or something.
I figured I would give myself a break from that and try to install the original software that the whole **** thing got started with in the first place.

Guess

What

?????

G#$ D$MN @#%$IN' Ahhhhhhhhhhh!

I/O errors again!!!!!

(So now my goal is to burn the **** CD ....I wish)

Now all I want to do is get the puter so that it at least works right.

It's not mine and I it was fine till I turned into a Brainsurgeon!

I am at a wits end.

I guess if any one knows of some genric PCI Controller driver that I might try or any suggestions at all PLEASE HELP ME!!!
Thank you!

and for all who at least read Happy New Year!

pucker pucker
LOL!

I first would run System File checker.

It's under system information, drop down menu at top, & tools.

If you remember the specific files that were missing, or came up during the errors, let it restore them from the Win98 cd..

Try that for starters..

I will try that thank you!
Never did that before.
I really wish I knew what files I uninstalled?
I feel really hosed on this one!
I don't know but I will definately try it and see if I can get anywhere with it and let you know how it turns out.
Thanks for the suggestion and reply!
I'll keep ya informed.

i'd also download and run microsoft regclean - by the sounds of it - that registry is totally fried due to all the deletes and changes along the way -

better yet - strip the beast down to nothing but the basics - motherboard - video card - hard drive - cd drive - period...
format the beast - take it down to it's shorts - then reinstall the OS -

make sure it sees everything okay so far - go into safe mode and look at device manager to see that everything is indeed okay and nothing "extra" and or "unidentified" is out there except possibly the USB port which you can fix later.

then start adding things one at a time and load them up with the latest drivers as you go - the modem is a good place to start - then the NIC if you have one - then the sound card/game controller combo - then any other devices....

Then install Norton AV and get the latest definition set off the http://www.symantec.com web site and run a sweep - if you brought over any boot sector viruses you'll find them now - if so - then look into doing a low level format on the hard drive ( writing all zeros to all parts of the drive ) and start over -

An alternative to this which I had fun doing once is rebooting into safe mode and removing almost every device except the floppy and the hard drive - rebooting and letting the device manager re-detect everything and installing new drivers as I went for each item. This once cleared up a bunch of cratering *.vxd errors I kept having without having to lose everything installed on the system..... - just takes a little less time than rebuilding from scratch. it's a dirty little back-door systems support people use when they don't want to move the bosses system -but have to fix it.....

Have you tried restrting the computer in MS-DOS Mode and typing scanreg /restore and pick a date previous to the problem?

Cheers!
