If you're going to be editing video, then you are going to need BOTH.

Personally, I'd grab the larger HD now, because it's usually much easier to add RAM at a later date than it is to mess with a new (or additional) HD.

But make no mistake, you will need both HD space and all the RAM you can afford if video editing is going to performed on a regular basis.

When editing video`s, HD space is essential! I requires a lot of space and the more you have the better.

The Ram can wait for a bit because although it will probably help with video editing, it isn`t essential right now, not like the hd space.

Like the above post, you will need both, but the HD is more important.

I would get the HD first because the RAM upgrade is painless and a HD update can come in two flavors. Little pain or much pain.

well looking at price wise what gives you the most bang for the buck ?

hard drives on the other hand, with every month that passes you get more gig's for less $

I'd get the ram while the prices are cheap
couse next month 256meg could cost ya $300.00
but next month a 60gig drive will probably be the same price as a 40gig now

hmmmmmmm...scotter has an excellent point. The RAM prices are quite low and the hd prices aren't going to get any higher.

If you got one item now, when would you be able to get the other one? How crucial is it to get a new hd now? In other words, how much space have you used already?

I'm confused...are you getting a 40gb drive or a 20gb? What rpm? What drive?

I just had a similar situation a few weeks ago, that ended today. BUT I [b]badly[/i] needed space, so I got the hard drive (45gb IBM Deskstar added to existing 10gb Quantum Fireball). I also had 128mb RAM already. Sure, it was slow, but I delt with it....until today http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. I just purchased a stick of 256mb PC133 to make a grand total of 384mb RAM. Should be flying when I get that http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Well first of all, how big is the hard drive that you have now and how much space is left? I think that info given will help to decide which should come first.

There are a few requirements that are essential for Video editing....


1) Fast CPU
2) A lot of RAM
3) A lot of disk space
4) Fast Hard disk. Preferably SCSI...

Should I spend an extra 50 bucks on 256mb ram
or the 50 buck on a 40gig hard drive instead of a 20gig.

Going to use system with a fire wire card to edit home videos, with my sony camcorder, and for send video email and conferncuing, as for gaming adventure/rpg types.

I just got 256 ram in this machine (win98)and I didn't notice that much difference though photoshop opened faster and it seemed like some intense games liked it when loading up new levels. I'd go and get the hard drive first because editing videos is really going to take up some hd space. Then, get the ram. But then again, you didn't say how much ram you were starting with.

ND- That is the line I was thinking(get the ram and hd) but i would have to skip the GEFORCE CARD/ OR RADEON, to get both.

I HAVE NOTHING RIGHT NOW(sorry for the caps)
nor do i have time to build it or experience. I've been thinking about getting a 1,000mhz t-bird with an asus board(waiting for the ddr boards but???) from either nextechinc.com or cyberpowerpc(mostly likly the first one).
I do like games (role playing/adventure) and have always played a playstation and nintendo
very few computer games, but have a hard time justifing that amount of money they want for the geforce 2 (asus deluxe) card or the ddr radeon(which i was think about getting either one for the video in and out). I rather put that money into a playstation 2. i have the sony digital camcorder with the d'link, so I'm going to get the pci firewire card from averdv(??).

The more qustion i ask the more I understand
I think I'll go with with the Asus board??
the 1,000mhZ amd t-bird, 256 ram 40gig ata/100 7200rpm hard drive, the fire wire card for the camcorder(conferncing, video emails, and editing) and the rest of the basic stuff(keyboard, mouse, etc, basic 3d card),
Should I go with windows 98se or windows me or??

Go for the RAM as hdd prices drop on a regular basis whiel RAM prices are extremely low and may go up (hdd prices will not go up)

As for the OS:
Well it seems that you are having a conflict about playing games on your system.
I would say, if you are going to game...go with 98SE. ME has had loads of problems and until ME2 or whatever patch M$ puts out becomes available. There are mixed reviews on ME. The only real benefits are freely DLable anyway (faster defrag (?), faster boot, and Media Player 7) If you are not going to game often, go with Win2000. It is a fast and stable OS. I love it. Much better than 98SE in stability with the only drawback being limited gaming capabilities. I game a fair amount but play only half life and have had no problems there.
