I guess I am learning by trial & error. I have had copying errors while burning CD's, 5 of my box of 10 CD-R's are ruined because of a difference between reading & writing speeds. The thing that bothers me is that I don't get an error prior to copying that would allow me to change the setup. It starts copying and then errors which ruins the disk. Will have to use CDWR disks I guess. They can be reformatted and used again if errors occur. GPo codybear 12-25-2000, 06:06 PM http://www.fadden.com/cdrfaq/ surrealchereal 12-25-2000, 07:23 PM well, what software are you using? i have mine set up to test and burn, it tests and only burns after it tests ok. i have never made a coaster becasue of that problem. i did tho untill i bothered to look in the set up and set it to test then burn. i juat have the adaptec easy cd free stuff that came with my burner. GPo 12-25-2000, 08:47 PM I am using NTI CD maker 2000. It came with my bundle. Some people have been having trouble with it also. Others recommend Adaptec easy CD. Anyone know where I can download a trial version ? GPo Dave_H 12-25-2000, 09:05 PM I may be wrong but I don't think that Adaptec offers a trial version. Personally, I have had great results using Nero. They have a trial version availible here: http://www.ahead.de/en/download.htm There current trial version will work until 2/28/2001. Best of luck. Dave jam57 12-25-2000, 10:38 PM I just got the TDK velocd 12x10x32 with burn-proof for x-mas. I love this drive, It came bundled with Nero 5 also. sharder8 12-25-2000, 11:55 PM I orginally used Adaptec easy CD, used the test and burn feature and still made a few coasters. I switched to Nero last week and have burned a half dozen CD's and everything went smooth. Has anyone got any experience with this? martyt 12-26-2000, 05:14 AM Lackmusboy I didn't put any info about the Plextor or TDK here because of price. Both the TDK and Plextor use the Samsung burn proof technology. The TDK comes with a version of NERO and the Plextor comes with the basic Adaptec Easy CD creator. I bought my TDK about five weeks ago and I am happy with it. It is a 12/10/32 machine. I sent in for a $50 rebate which means that my cost from Circuit City was a net of $250. "tdk.com" shows that a 16/10/40 machine is coming out. The new machine is supposed to be able to do audio rips at 32x. My machine is rated at 24X for audio rips. I hope this helps you decide. Lackmusboy 12-26-2000, 06:27 AM I looked for the TDK in here in Sweden but I couldnīt find it. And ordering hardware from oversea is not recommended from what I hear http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. Anyway, this Plextor; is it about the same as the TDK, only more expensive? martyt 12-26-2000, 07:19 AM I wish I knew if the actual function of the machine was similar. There have been a few reviews concerning these and for the most part the TDK noses out the Plextor by a hair. One review liked the Plextor better because the TDK was a bit slower with NERO and INCD according to that magazine. But they admitted that there were new versions of NERO and INCD that might make a difference. NERO is great for making copies of copy protected programs, if that is an issue for you. http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article.asp?aid=35122 http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/stories/reviews/0,6755,2665482,00.html http://cnet.com/hardware/0-2645886-7-1648566.html?tag=st.co.1091.dir.2645886-7-1648566 Lackmusboy 12-26-2000, 07:46 AM OK, thanks for your help! jam57 12-26-2000, 09:14 AM Quote from martyt:"tdk.com" shows that a 16/10/40 machine is coming out. Hey martyt if you go to www.velocd.tdk.com (http://www.velocd.tdk.com) they have a firmware update: Increase Rip speed to Maximum of 32X (Digital Audio Extraction) Improved reading of CD-Text Better ability to read scratched discs Better performance of writing to 10X high speed CD-RW martyt 12-26-2000, 02:21 PM thanks Jam57, I had already done an upgrade to 1.05 but I am sure the 1.07 will make the burner that much better. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif So I am editing here. I did the firmware upgrade and the program that they have posted (freeware) measured the rip speed as just a bit faster. Both before and after the rip speed was measured between 10 and 13 for audio. This may be less than the 24 to 32 but is still very fast and it is also true that the way that the ripping is measured seems to vary from review to review. I am happy with a 10x or a 32x rip as the drive is nice. I just did a test today with my daughter's new Aiwa discman portable player. It played a CD RW that I made without any trouble. This is like having a tape recorder without tape!!! I can't wait until the video DVD recorders and camcorders come down in price. I got it at Best Buy, but I havent installed it yet, but I think I will be very satisfied. RLT65 12-26-2000, 08:18 PM I got a cendyne 6x4x32 (Ricoh) for only $99 at compusa. I know that its kinda slow, but I do not sit & watch it burn so I do not care. Rhonda surrealchereal 12-27-2000, 01:27 AM Ok group riddle me this. When I burn cd's I end up with cd's that will always play on my reg cd/dvd (pioneer) stereo. But they do not always play on the car cd player, sometimes they do, but mosttimes they won't (the same cd) I just get an error. I have taken them to friends homes where they will not play on their "regular" cd player, but will play on their little cheap boom box so I can't find any logical consistency (logical to me anyway). I just figured it was my burner. A Ma****a CW-7586. Is it the software, and am I making coasters? Because if it doesn't work in my car it is really not too much value to me. I have cked web sites, etc. I have found a lot of people that have the same problem, but no solutions. Any one have any ideas? I have tried about 6 different brands of cd's. Which is the only solution ever offered, use the silver ones, no the gold ones, oh no only the green and blue ones work............ no they don't. canit 12-27-2000, 03:42 AM Not all CD players(or ROMs) will read CD-R, especially the older machines. CD-Rs and more so CD-RWs are less reflective than premade audio CDs. Have you tried different brands of CD-Rs(lighter color like silver)? gyoung 12-27-2000, 05:48 AM I got a good deal on a 8x4x32 Sony Spress burner a couple of weeks ago. They were on sale for $129 with a $30 rebate at CompUSA. I sold my I/O MagicWriter 2x2x6 on ebay for $107 and bought the Sony at Circuit City (They did a price match for CompUSA), so after rebate it only cost me $94! Basically I upgraded to a CDRW that is 4 times faster and made $13!!! HfdWolfPack 12-27-2000, 09:48 AM I just got the Plextor 12-10-32a. The drive itself is greeaat. But Acraptec cheesey cd creator 4 that comes with it does not want to work the LiveWare3! from Creative. I would say get the TDK veloCD only because of the Nero5 bundle. I used Nero on my Plextor and seems to be smooth surrealchereal 12-27-2000, 11:25 AM yes, I have used the silver, the green etc. with the same results. The confusing thing is that a homemade cd, has played in my car at times and at times the same cd just gets an error. I would gladly replace my burner if that would work. or my car cd player if I knew that would definitely solve the problem. any suggestions PLEASE, just sign me,,,,, tuned out and desperate. socalgal 12-28-2000, 12:54 AM surrealchereal I had the same problem - couldn't burn to play in my car's CD player. Nero (http://www.ahead.de/en/Index2.htm) converts to .cda with a mouseclick. This works in my car CD player. I would think that unless you have a much older (my car's a '96) player, it should work. surrealchereal 12-28-2000, 05:54 AM mine is a 98, from one socalgal to another, yee haa and thanks a lot, i will try it today! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif SysOpt.com
