when i try to install some games i get and error. i checked the error and it said that i was probably in dos compatiblility mode. i have no idea what this is or how to fix it. has anybody else had this problem? can anyone help me?

It's an ouch'er...
I have played with that a few times and the answer was a format on 2 out of 3 machines. You can check to see if it is true by holding down your Windows key and tap the Pause key.
If you don't have a Windows key then get into the Control Panel and into System icon.
Click on the Performance thumb tab at the top of the panel and if you see a windows near the bottom, it will say that some drives are using Compatibility mode pageing.....

Right click on My Computer and go to properties. Under the third tab to the right, it will tell you there if you are in DOS compatibility mode or not. I believe the cd-rom is usually disabled when I have seen this though. This is usually caused by a corrupt driver and more info on how to fix a general Dos Comp mode problem can be found at the microsoft site. I will try to find the link for you.
