I recently upgraded a Gateway with an Athlon processor (plenty of power) from Windows ME to Windows XP Home Edition. I used the "new" option so everything was wiped clean before loading. It went well and most things seem to work - except I get no sound.

I have looked in device manager for problems and there seems to be none. I did not load drivers from the Gateway CD but rather, XP seem to have all the correct drivers. Is this a correct assumption? All devices say they are working properly. I went into sound and the settings seemed good. Still no sound.

The sound card says it is a Creative SB Live! Series WDS

The speakers are Boston Acoustics Digital BA735 sub with two other small speakers.

Any suggestions???

I wouldn't assume that XP has the correct drivers. Try uninstalling the drivers and re-install the drivers from Creative Labs if they have an XP version available.

Your problem is your speakers (REALLY) The take digital output, you need to send them digital output- it is analog by default

I suspected this might be the case. How do I send it digital output? I am not familiar with this.

You probably are not going to like the answer...

For full details:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q302/7/10.ASP

Try:
Click Start , point to All Programs , point to Accessories , point to Entertainment , and then click Volume Control .

In Volume Control, on the Options menu, click Advanced Controls .

Click Advanced Options on the Play Control dialog box.

Click the Digital Output Only check box, and then click Close .

These options are not available for all sound card drivers, I think...

Downloaded drivers from Creative - Clicked to Digital output only box. Everything now works.:) :)
