Thought I would try posting here to see if anybody had any ideas on this problem I'm having. I'm building a computer for the first time. I purchased an ABIT KR7A-133R. After installation, when I tried powering on, power only came on for a moment. The power indicator LED on the motherboard flickered on and all of the fans turned for just a second. Then the LED went out and the fans stopped. The standby LED on the motherboard remained lit throughout. I then tried pressing the power switch on and off several times and nothing happened. I waited for a few minutes and pressed the power switch again and the same thing happened as when I first plugged the computer in (power for a brief moment). I unplugged the computer from the wall, rechecked all connections to the motherboard. Everything appeared to be in the correct position. I plugged in the computer again and tried powering on, and the same thing described above happened. It seems I have power only for a split second when I power on. Each time I unplug and replug the computer, the same thing described above happens.

Does anybody have any ideas why I can't power up? I would appreciate any assistance. Thank you.

Check for grounds, the motherboard could be grounding, check CPU fan plug. Then check all the Sysopts posts lately for similar. There have been so many new system builds, etc. not powering up it gets a little tiring to repost all the stuff you have to check.

Sorry, didn't mean to give you a cold reception..
Welcome to Sysopt, Chris!
Its just that as I say, there have been a lot of these lately.Just go through some of them here, in Tech. Support, Motherboards, etc. and you'll see the stuff you can try.
First start at the Power supply then TS as an electrical problem.Follow the flow of power to the next stages.Make sure the chip isn't overheating and the fan is working and plugged in, as some boards will power down if not, or overheating.Next Keep following the progression. The CPU must obtain the correct Bus speed. The memory must be fully inserted (easy to miss, even if it seems o.k. check it again.).Remove any none essential cards.Triple check (and I can't emphasize this strongly enough) everything.Be absolutely sure that the CPU, power plug and memory are seated correctly and fully. Then the AGP video card, which can be very difficult to insert fully.
Take it slow. Its like building a car.Don't get too impatient, you will actually save time is you are extremely thorough and scutinizing from the start,Start with removing the whole thing from the case.
Even if you're sure its in there right.

Thanks for the info and the link. It should certainly be helpful. I also have an e-mail in to ABIT. Hopefully they respond soon.

Thanks again,

Chris

Hi Chris

I just built a system with an Abit KR7A-133 had the same problem the ATX connector from the power supply looked fully seated but was not. Remove it then reseat until you hear it click in place, then retry. I would have bet in was all the way in but it was'nt.
Anyway just a thought. Good luck...

Thanks for the input. I actually figured out the problem. I had the power supply to the floppy connected upside down. I changed that and the system powered up. On to problem no. 2, now. I can't get into BIOS. I'm getting one long beep. A pause for several seconds, then another long beep. The pattern continues indefinitely. According to some troubleshooting guides I have read, it seems that this is a RAM refresh error. I'm not to sure what that is, but I think it means the RAM card I purchased may be defective. Either that or the slot in the motherboard is defective. I'm looking into these possibilities now. This is pretty frustrating.

But thanks for the advice, guys.
