My soyo dragon+ mobo shows an error when new hardware is found for usb. I'm using win2k with sp2. I loaded windows with usb disabled in bios then enabled usb to find it not responding as a usb host controller. Everything else is working fine. Do I have to reload windows to get all the system files for windows 2000 pro to run usb? I've loaded all current soyo mobo drivers and I think the bios should be ok. Thanks

Welcome to SysOpt!
Can please describe the error in detail?
Did you reinstall the OS fresh? Is your power supply up to the job?
Look in System Information > Hardware Resources > IRQs and see if the USB controllers are sharing an IRQ.

Thanks for responding. Everything is new. Dragon+ motherboard less then a few months old, new case with 400 watt supply, 2-IBM 60 gig drives in stripping raid mode running fine, etc. Windows 2000 pro/sp2 installed on clean drives. All motherboard drivers loaded. I haven't reloaded windows again after enabling the onboard usb v1.1. The usb controller info is listed under other devices and says drives not configured. No irq's conflict show since I can't get past the error showing up no matter what sequence I use to install drivers. I suspect I need to reload windows but don't what to make things worst and lose all that I've installed. Windows help screens indicate when I reload windows I'll lose setting. To what degree I'm not sure. I'm only familiar with windows 95. What is the best procedure to reconfigure system files for usb in windows 2000 without doing a fresh reload, if you think that the problem? If I reload windows will I have to install all the other software again? Please let me know what other details you many need. I don't have a backup system in place yet. Thanks again.

When you set up the BIOS before installation, did you deliberately set it for "PnP OS"? Believe it or not, BIOS should be set to "non-PnP" and Manual.
You "Repair" Win2K by booting from the CD and selecting Repair > Fast Repair and not lose anything, so don't sweat that.
Open System Information (MSINFO32.EXE) and navigate to Hardware Resources > IRQs. Click anywhere in the right pane and then press CTRL-A and then CTRL-C. You have copied that data to the clipboard. Paste that data in a reply here.

I set the bios to non-pnp before installing windows but did set it to auto. I could not get the ctrl-a and ctrl-c function to work on my computer but was able to attach a copy. Using the repair feature sounds good. I'm learning a lot. Thanks again. A day without learning something is probably a wasted day! I won't take any further action until I get the whole picture from you of what the main problem is.

Ok. Make sure USB is enabled in BIOS. Disable one or both Com ports if you're not using them. Set OS to non-PnP and Manual.
Boot from the CD. Just run through the repair process. You likely don't have the ERD, so don't choose that method. Just do a fast repair.
If no joy, reinstall Windows 2000 from within Win2K (run Setup on the CD) and (on reboot) press F5 when you see "Setup is inspecting hardware..." and select the Standard PC HAL when prompted. Continue by using the Repair > Fast Repair method.

I got my usb to work. I delayed making the OS changes until I finished my taxes on my computer first. I disabled com2 asyou recommended and already had OS set to non-pnp. I could not get the repair process to work from booting the cd or within windows. Booting windows from cd didn't work since I did not have a ERD disk and it could not find the repair files on the computer either. Re-installing windows 2000 from within did correct the usb problem but I didn't get prompted for the repair process. It went through the complete upgrade steps even after pressing F5, etc. Re-installing window under upgrade found the files I needed I guess, but couldn't find any repair files. My usb connected printer workes fine along with everything else. Only minor changes occured to rest of the system. So many options available to learn and so little time. Is my senerio of upgrade instead of clean install what should have happen? Thanks again for all of your help. Dick
