Outlook Express automatically configures itself using the settings found in I.E. However, I haven't been able to config Outlook 2000 to access my Hotmail email accounts. I could sure use some help! Both I.E. and Outlook Express setup wizards successfuly configured themselves on all the computers of my home network, and connect to the Internet with no problems.
Everything I have tried while attempting to configure Outlook 2000 has failed. I keep getting an error message that says, "the server cannot be found." The details of my system are given below:
I have built a small local area network at home. This is a peer-to-peer network and all the computers use Windows 98SE. The network is working fine and all the computers have broadband access through the LAN. My LAN consists of several computers connected to a Linksys HUB, that is connected to a Linksys router, and then to a digital cable modem.
Under the Tools menu I selected the Accounts option and opened the Internet Accounts dialog box. Under the Mail tab I clicked the Properties button and tried setting different perameters under the General, Servers and Connection tabs with negative results. Under the Connection tab I tried two different settings: 1) Connect using my local area network (LAN), and 2) Connect using Internet Explorer's dialer. I wasn't really sure what settings to use under the Servers tab. Under Server Information I put POP3, POP3 and SMTP, my account name, my password, checked the box next to "Remember password" and checked box next to "My servers requires authentication." Under the General tab I typed "MSN Hotmail Server" under Mail Account option. I filled in my name, and put my email address in the boxes to the right of E-mail address and Reply_address options. Finally, I checked the small box next to "Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing. Finally, I clicked the OK button. I tried the Apply button too. However, "no joy."
I assume I have something set wrong under the Servers tab or the Connection tab. Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong? I'd really appreciate some advice.
