It's mega-fast & has Multiread capabilities, so reading CD-Rs is possible. It's around $90 CAN, or about $65-70 US MrEd 07-13-1999, 05:02 PM I have a Creative Labs 48x that I've been really happy with. I havn't had any problems with it whatsoever. My HiVal pooped out on me after installing 3 programs. They may be better now, but 6 months ago, they really sucked. scourge 07-13-1999, 05:13 PM You can get a bare 3rd gen DVD drive for about the same price and just use it as a cdrom until you get the money to purchase a decoder for it or if you have a really fast machine, dowload a softdvd player and use it now as both. I've been tossing around this idea for a while because I'm disappointed with my 24x cdrom. Just a thought. Ed_S 07-13-1999, 11:18 PM Have AOpen 40x, works great with CD-Rs. Actually bought 32X but it wouldn't read them so exchanged it for 40. Around $40 US AndreBranco 07-14-1999, 04:01 AM i have a 44x cdrom every time i put a disc the whole system freezes for 0.5-1 second is this normal? BigMac 07-14-1999, 06:17 AM I have a philips 48x, **** fine, good price too. MadMatt 07-15-1999, 01:03 AM I've had very bad luck with creative labs drives. - Actually had smoke coming out of one! I've since spent the extra bucks and have had enjoyed phillips and toshiba drives. I'm considering one of these kenwwod multi beam drives now. Anyone had any experience with them? skywalker[TSG] 07-15-1999, 02:21 AM i have always gone for the cheapest cdrom drives ive saved around 500$on this over a couple of years 1995> and i have not had a single problem with them and even if one fails and i have to buy a new one im still not getting some expensive cd rom drive i remember the good old days when a bought a 1x cd for 340$ and it had 8bit sound and speaker mounted in it and it was like a big rock and im still using it on my old 486comp from 1994 and it works just fine once i bought a floppy drive for 50$it was an 8" device and it used 5,25" discs hehe SysOpt.com
