Was having problems with this system locking up, and after rebooting, it hung at the Win98SE splash screen.
Tried booting in safe mode, and same thing. Tried booting from Win98SE startup disk, and was sucessful the first few times, and tried installing and running F-prot virus scan. System locked up again shortly after virus scan started.
Tried unplugging all cards except video, removed memory chips individually, reseated CPU, installed new fan/heatsink, did notice old heatsink was pretty hot to the touch when problem first occured.
Removed both hard drives, and plugged in a known working drive, and system still hangs, sometimes at Win98 splash screen, sometimes during POST.
System Specs: Dell Dimension XPS P200s. Intel Pentium 200, 64 MB RAM.

Unfortunately i dont have another socket 7 CPU to try in this system, and i suspect that it may be the culprit. I havnet swapped out the power supply yet, and may try that next. I have reset the BIOS via jumpers on the motherboard, and still have the same problems.
Any suggestions welcomed.

Afraid that the overheating caused a partial damage to the CPU.
Try your best getting a socket 7 just to try it in.If everything is fine,so it's your CPU is being damaged by the Huge heat.Sorry.

Had simalar problem with a HP I have.

Unplug the pc
press and hold the power button for 10 sec to discharge
remove the cables and power from the hdd
remove your cmos battery and reset your cmos.

This is what I did and when I turned it back on everything worked. Mine keep sending to the HP blue screen of death.

Once u get it up reformat the hdd.

Popped in a used P166 chip, reset the jumpers, and all is well.
Thanks for the input folks.
