Just been to the 3dxf home page and read the little thank you letter. What has happened?? is there going to be support for their products in the future and is NVidea gonna still produce 3dfx cards???

3Dfx has gone the way of the Dodo, I read that they will continue to support their products until Feb.

Talk about blown opportunities!

3dfx had the world in it's hands...and squandered the chance to stay at or near the top.

Greed, bad decisions and ineptitude sank these folks. I USED to exclusively use 3dfx boards in my machines. Too bad as I was very happy with their product and performance!

Farewell Titanic...er I mean 3dfx. The products were great but your plunge under water and to the bottom was unfortunate for us all...

I too remained a loyal 3dfx customer and fan--in the last three months I bought three cards from them for various machines.

Unfortunately, it wasn't enough. Too bad. Their products, quite literally, were too little, too late. If the Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 had launched in January instead of May we'd be looking at very different numbers here. That one delay didn't cause the company's bankruptcy, but it was the final straw.

Since the geforce direct competition is gone (3dfx) it's now time to see the future offerings from the Survivors (ATI n' Matrox)!

But who knows, maybe we will see GeForces with VSA chips n' hardware FSAA!

One thing I look forward to is no more freaking glide!

Don't get me wrong... it's a nice API and all, but I hate it when programs insist on it, and I have to resort to a wrapper.

One thing I'm not looking forward to is less competition. Competition keeps prices down and technology moving.

I think ATI and Matrox will do that for Nvidia. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm not sure how it is in the states (been away too long! LOL) , but 3DFX has been in the dead scene for quite some time now... They were at their best out here when they first released Vodoo 2 & 3. ATI and Nvidia seems to pretty dominate the video card market out here.

It went wrong when they bought STB.They should have focussed all their attention to their GPU's.The Voodoo 1 & 2 were very fast (although visual quality was poor). The Voodoo 3 2000 just wasn't fast enough to compete, and so were the ones that came after it.

I too am happy that 3Dfx is out of the way, because now I can be sure that all games that come out now fully support my hardware. The sad part is that NVidia is losing competition.Logical and likely is that their prices will go up.
NVidia already was controlling the market, but now with 3Dfx out of the way...

I don't really see ATi or Matrox as serious competition.ATi is just too slow and Matrox is too expensive AND slow.I know ATi is great and I'm sure Matrox is too,but NVidia is just going too fast for them.

The V3 wasn't too slow--it was too limited. The TNT2 never beat the V3 in terms of sheer 16 bit speed--but it pounded it on image quality and, of course, 32 bit color.

As for ATI, I don't know why you're calling their products 'slow.' I just installed an ATI Radeon 32 Meg DDR on a Duron system--frankly, I consider 85 fps in 1024x768x32 to be pretty darn good. Granted, it's not 'the fastest' you can buy, but come on here--anybody complaining about that frame rate needs to get a life.

Matrox, on the other hand, has already stated that they won't be focusing on a 3D solution for a while. I don't even really consider them a competitor--not with their G450 not even on par with Voodoo3 speed.

Speed is a relative thing. The ATi Radeon cards are slow compared to NVidia's best card, the GeForce2 Ultra. With the NV20 coming out in a short time, where is ATi?They still won't even have a card that's as fast as the GeForce2 GTS.

Barney,

While true, the Ultra still comes in at about $450 bucks. For that price, I'll take a Radeon 32 Meg DDR at about $160.

Also, in the end, the Radeon may win out against the GTS or Ultra. The Ultra/GTS solves the chronic memory bandwidth problem with sheer muscle--by using faster RAM. The Radeon uses a more-efficient memory allocation technique to achieve the same result. In two generations, when programs are much more aggressive in hardware requirements, efficiency will likely win out over muscle designs.
