After installing WinXP Pro, I connect to the internet via 56K dialup. Initially, everything works fine. After a minute or two, I will start getting "This page cannot be displayed" errors. At this point, nothing works.
Every time I try to run Windows Update, I get the list of critical updates, select one of them and then part-way through the download, I get the "page cannot be displayed" error.
Any ideas on what to look for in the settings?

What type of modem are you using, Jimstep? Is it USB or a Winmodem (as opposed to hardware)?

I am running an external CreativeLabs Modem Blaster on my serial port using the Win2K drivers, XP drivers don't exist. Modem works on Win98 and Linux Kernel 2.4.
Update: I ran through the Help and Support function on the Start menu. The problem was narrowed down to multiple winsock.dll's on my system. I have Win98 and WinXP installed on my system, dual bootable. Apparently, WinXP was finding and using the Win98 winsock.dll. As soon as I renamed the older winsock.dll, rebooted, the "page cannot be displayed" error has not returned. Pretty weird.
Now I'll just have to remember to rename the winsock.dll on my Win98 system before I can use the internet.

I have found that if you copy the root winsock files to the other locations, it usually rectifies that particular problem and keeps all the little "appies" happys. :)

I'm not following you on copying the "root winsock" files???

The ones in C:\Windows|Winnt. I find all Winsock files on all drives and then copy those on the root drive to the other locations - overwriting them. That gets everything in synch and I know I'm using the latest version.

I guess a newer version of winsock from WinXP will work with Win98.
This issue is happening again, but not as often. When I recycle power to the external modem and start everything back up, the connection works for awhile, longer than before. This sounds network related.
I am sharing two computers. I'm wondering if there is a misconfigured NIC card setting.

Hmm...NIC? Where does the NIC come in on a 56K setup? Are you using ICS?

I was using the internet connection sharing, but I went back and configured my system as a stand alone modem connection. I also found a USB host-to-host and scanner device conflict in the device manager. I resolved those devices and found a Genelink network connection in the network connections folder.
I'm currently connected to the internet, so I will see how long this connection last. I am wondering if the pending Genelink connection confused something internal.

I still have the same problem. I ran a program (I don't remember the name off the top of my head) that queried the network and report status. The failure is coming from the IP address of the ISP. That's interesting.

Jimstep - I had a similar problem with my laptop dropping it's network connection, turned out that it was part of my NIC, flashed the firmware on the NIC and everything has worked fine ever since....don't know if that helps or if it's relevent at all...
And BipolarBill - where is Missouri City in texas?

where is Missouri City in texas? It's SW of Houston, next to Stafford. Quail Valley Golf Club is in Missouri City

I've been working with the vendor who recommended using the standard XP 56K modem drivers and not theirs. Everything is working fine now. I just cannot use some of the modem features, like V92, modem on hold...
Thanks for you help...
