AT or ATX?

If this is not a new install, then it doesn't sound good.

I've seen bad switches, but it's uncommon.

AT and its about 11months old
it seems wierd that it would just die

It can just die. There are two things to rule out a bad PS or switch. The easier of the two is replacing the PS.

Oh Susan also if you have an inverted IDE cable.. it will also cause system to not power on.

skywalker.. what did you need when you ICQ'd me

Just a note while we're on this general topic.

ATX supplies do not take well to insults. I've had them apparently dead, but after a night's sleep, they're fine.

I believe what he meant was having your cable to and from the IDE and HD inverted (upsidedown).

Check and make sure the red stripe on your cable is closest to the power lead at your HD and CD end. Also...

The cable connector to the MB must also be facing the correct way. Usually toward the ISA slots and LED power leads, but not always. Check your MB manual for the correct direction.

Did you change anything prior to having these problems?

Any lights come on?

Check this out - I had the exact same symptoms you're describing in a machine I was working on - totally dead. After several minutes of severe panic (it was working when I started the job), I noticed that one the leads in one of the molex power connectors (hard drive type) was loose and sticking out the back of the connector slightly. I stuck it back in and the whole machine came back to life!
