I have the following burnt cd's that i'd like to give away. I'll even pay for shipping. I'd like to give them away to people who don't have a high speed connection (cable, dsl, t1 etc.). Since i have no way of telling if you have a high speed connection, i hope you'll be honest. I only have one copy of each. I'm not going to burn anymore of them.
I have:
Mandrake 8.0 Disk 1, 2
Mandrake 8.1 Disk 1, 2, 3
Redhat 7.0 Disk 1, 2
Redhat 7.2 Disk 1, 2

Why am i giving these away? Well, i was getting ready to throw them away, then decided to give them away instead.
I'm just sick of trying to install Linux on my system. So, please take these off my hands.

Please note that these were downloaded from the respective websites and burnt (by me) on blank cd's from the original ISO's. Therefore these cd's are the original images from the respective websites. I will not take any responsibility for any damage you might cause to your computer as a result of trying to install these. Make sure you do all the necessary research on installing Linux on your computer before proceeding.

hey moebius!

That's very nice of you!

If you happen to have any left, I would like Redhat 7.2

But, if you don't that's ok

I've just always wanted to try Linux and since
I just have a poky 56k modem, I couldn't dload the
900+ MB file.

You can email me at hitdamark@gbronline.com

if you still have the RedHat 7.0 I wouldn't mind having that...
I'm curious about this program and I have a spare in which to use it. E-mail is gbpec7@bellsouth.net

I've emailed everyone about their requests.
If gbpec7 gets back to me soon, he/she will get RedHat 7.0.
If davidamarkley gets back to me, he'll get RedHat 7.2.
If mordsithus gets back to me, he'll get Mandrake 8.1.
lowlife_ltd hasn't responded to my e-mails.

If you don't hear from mordsithus I'd love the Mandrake 8.1, if not I'd be more than happy to settle for the 8.0.

None of the distros I have will install properly on my Athlon XP and I'm having withdrawals.

Thanks in advance.

And yes I'm on 56k

PS: email is Rugor@hotmail.com

handy that ;)

moebius - you can't not try linux (eh...bad grammer) you have the attitude of the GNU community!!!!! Anyways, if you want or need any help trying to install linux there are ample resources available. That's the great thing about Linux, the community is the "tech support" line :) so ... if you decide you want to give it another whirl, lemme know. I'll be glad to help out.

Rugor - I'm running RedHat 7.2 on my Athlon XP and I haven't had any problems at all...what are you running into on the install?

The main problems I have been running into is that the kids were messing around looking for computer games and scratched my Linux CDs. The other problem is that I only have an old copy of Redhat 6.0 from a book that's not scratched and it has problems recognizing my gf2mx400. I wasn't saying it was the Athlon XP chip itself having problems with linux, just that the distros I had weren't working with my hardware.

As for the gf2 chip nVidia doesn't open source their drivers...so most distros don't come with the newest ones. Go ahead and setup linux on one of the comps...d/l the nvidia drivers...they're usually in rpms, but you can get tarballs as well, just make sure you're getting the right ones for your distro, install them and then setup your X server, and you're off and running :) well, it's a little more difficult than just that, but not much! I too have a GF card...a 4, which wasn't supported by RH 7.2 if you have access to a fast connection (local college, friend with cable) you can d/l 7.2 from RedHat( painfully slow! ) or ftp.ttu.edu (OMG it's HELLA fast!) I believe TTU has some other distros too...but it's a nice fast ftp site. If you want a walk through on how to setup your XF86Config-4 file for your GF just let me know. I'll write one up for you detailing the entire install - I've done it many times :)

Good Luck,
Jared

Hi Jared.
Actually, i've posted to these forums a couple of times asking for help on installing Linux on my RAID 0 drives. Never got much help. If you can help me, let me know. Before i set up the raid, i had redhat 7.2 and even mandrake, and i loved it. Unfortunately, when i try to install redhat 7.2, it tells me that the drive table on my drives (which incidentally are my raid drives) are damaged and asks me if i want to reset it. If i do reset it, then i lose my win2000 partitions. I cannot afford to do that. So, i'm at a loss.

Hey Moebius,
Let me do some research into setting up linux on a raid...might just give me an excuse to buy a couple more drives :) or blow up my roommate's computer...either way. Couple of questions: what type of raid controller are you using? SCSI or IDE? And MOBO type? Get back to me and I'll see what I can find out. I wouldn't think that RH would have a problem with a mirroring raid setup, but you never know...

One last question...are you partitioning with Windows b4 you install Linux or are you using the tools that come with RH for the partitioning?

moebius - I've found some stuff on setting up a raid in Linux here's the link http://linas.org/linux/raid.html it has some good info, but I don't know if it goes over dual booting it or not...hope this helps you out.

Hi Jared.
I'll first try to answer all your questions.
My motherboard is an Abit BE6-II Ver 2.0
Raid controller is HPT370.
3 IDE hard drives: 2 IBM 40GB and 1 Maxtor 30GB.
I have the 2 IBM's setup as RAID 0 (striping). I use the Maxtor for backups. I want to install Linux on the IBM drives. I have win2000 installed on the raid drives. So i'm installing Linux after win2000.
I've tried using the Linux Disk Druid, it wouldn't see the raid. I've also used Partition Magic to create Linux partitions on the raid drives; that didn't help either.
I have seen the howto pages at the link before. Unfortunately, i didn't find too much help there.

moebius - well, you've tried everything that I would have....unfortionately I don' t have enough working knowledge or RAID and Linux to be much help. The only thing that I could think to try is bypassing the RAID option in Linux when you're installing. It SHOULD still install via your RAID controller since the RAID would have been initilized before your cd boots. As far as I know the RAID option in the RH install is mearly for software raid configuration, not hardware. I can't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to set it up this way other than that your mirror drive would be a different partition type and size than what your actual "used" drive would be....actually this might cause a problem, as to how to get around it....I have no clue!

Good Luck,
Jared

BTW, i'm not using the maxtor for mirroring (raid 1). I manually backup stuff there.
You're right, the install should see the raid 0 as one big drive. Instead, it wants to overwrite the boot sector and remove the raid.
