What brand of drive is it? turbodog 04-05-2002, 06:28 AM its a DiamondMax (maxtor) VL40-40GB. It will lie in the box with my 30gb hd (which I think is a WD). they are both 100 ata. my current partition on the 30gb has 5gb reserved for windows and 'most' of my 'program files' folder (some is on the next partition b/c of size). I remember how to partition it in windows 2000, but not sure what would be the recommended size of partitions. Oh yes, the purpose for the extra 40gb drive is to work on video from my camcorder copying to cd (vcd to be precise-maybe if I'm lucky a dvd burner is in my future!). thanks for the suggestions- Paul ps- my 3 partitions on the original 30gb hd are all NTFS (for security) and are 5gb (80% full), 11.5gb (25%) and 11.5gb (20%). turbodog 04-05-2002, 06:38 AM I bought the drive off of ebay-a take out-didn't come w/ software but figure I could get off website if needed. I have a backup (both files and Reg) that takes up 270mb, but if I did a full it would take up alot more. should I dedicate a partition just for backup info and format in FAT or FAT32 (to be accessible outside of win2000 NTFS)? any recommendations from those who have a good file system laid out would be appreciated. I would have never dreamed 5gb would be too small for the OS and software programs (not including the files I create,,,). thanks, P:) BipolarBill 04-05-2002, 08:19 AM I would use Win2000 Disjk Management to create two more ~12GB FAT32 partitions outside of the 5GB. Now that you have 2 hard drives, you should consider purchasing Partition Magic or Partition Commander. I like the first. Both allow you to actively change a partition's size without losing data.
