This is quite interesting. Ok, 56k modem, fully installed all drivers that came with the disk. Installed the modem, went to com 3, did the diagnostics on it, it checked out. I ran modem doctor on it, it checked out. I still cannot get a dial tone, checked the phone line its tone, tried a phone on the line, its fine. So I wanted to try the old 14,400 modem, I removed the the 56k from device manager along with the hfc filke and did the same in the modem area, removed the modem, I didn't install the 14,400 in yet I tried to boot, it hung at the win 98 screen. It will boot up in safe mode after pressing f8, it seems as though its still trying to find that 56k. Hmm, trying to get past the lockup and try a different modem but it won't boot through unless that 56 is physically installe. Can ya help me on this one. Maybe its a registry key I have to wipe out. LMK Thanks!

First, I would run the troubleshooter in Windows help and see if that can help you. If that doesn't work, then I would uninstall the modem and then reinstall it. Finally, I would make sure that the modem is ok (that it is not banged up, or something looked chipped on it). Hope this helps!

I don't know if this will help or not, but I remember having a nightmare trying to install and uninstall a US Robotics winmodem in Windows 95. The USR drivers would leave just enough junk in the registry to convince windows that there was still a USR modem installed, but yet it wouldn't work. Then when uninstalled, it wouldn't let you reinstall it (because windows thought it was still there, even after removing it! ) Finally after near hair pulling out, we found a utility on the US Robotics website called wmregcln.exe that removed all traces of the offending modem from the registry. After running that, it installed smoothly and worked just fine. Don't know if you have a USR (now 3com) winmodem, or not. But if you do, (or have a similar problem with a different make) check for some kind of register cleaner on the web site. Maybe it will help.
