I have a HP 7100. I got frustrated with the Adaptec DirectCD because the burned CDRW couldn't be read on another computer unless DirectCD was installed there as well. I uninstalled DirectCD and installed Nero. I also have Adaptec Easy CD Creator installed. I have one HP CDRW disk and the rest are Smart & Friendly CDRW disks. I can't get any program to allow me to format the disks. When I just try to write to them, the drive begins the burn then errors out after a few minutes.
Don't the CDRW disks have to be formated? I'm aware that the other drives must be multiread compatible for them to recognise the burned CDRW.
How do other people seem to so effortlessly talk about burning CDRW's like they are floppies and I have so much trouble? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
thanks

Yes, when you burn CD's using Direct CD to CDRW's you will need to install UDF reader on the system that the CDRW media needs to be read off of. And for CDR medias, you will have to "close session" to be read by other CDROM drives as a standard CDROM....As for for Win2K, it will not be necessary to install UDF reader, because Win2K already has its version of UDF reader.

As for formatting the CDRW medias, they already come pre-formatted, so all you have to do is just burn it.....But if you're gonna use it for Direct CD, you will have yo format the CDRW in Direct CD format which will install about 120MB Direct CD system files.. Therefore, you won't be able to use the whole 640MB when formatted in Direct CD format

Anyhow, you're saying that you get errors when trying to burn CD's.. That could be lead to a number of reasons.. My first suggestion would be to try a different brand of CDRW media and see how that goes. Some CDRW medias and CDRW drives have incompatibility problems.. As for me, Memorex CDRW medias have been a big problem on my Plextor CDRW drive. Burns well, but error on format. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

First try what I've suggested above and we'll go on from there. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

"Yes, when you burn CD's using Direct CD to CDRW's you will need to install UDF reader on the system that the CDRW media needs to be read off of." In version 3.0 and up of direct cd the cdr or cdrw will automatically load the udf reader on most machines if it is not found. Not all cdrw's are preformatted and to re use must be erased and format if you want to use direct cd. I use those Smart and Friendly cdrw's all the time with few problems. For more info see http://www.roxio.com/ And i would suggest joining their listserv at http://listserv.roxio.com/

The problem here may also be the fact you have both nero and adaptec installed. It has been found these programs have conflicts with each other as they use different drivers. Choose either one and have only it installed. To use the cdrw like a floppy make sure it is formatted in directcd (or an equivalent packet writing software), as noted above directcd will take up about 120MB, but will allow you to add, delete, update etc... files.

Very true there, Jayman. I've heard problems when using Adaptec Easy CD Creator and Nero Burning ROM. I hear they don't get along so well......

I concur. Adaptec and Nero do not get along. Ditch EZ Coaster Creator and Stick with Nero....

Strange how most people dislike Easy CD Creator. I know that it doesn't have good features for burning CD's with different options, but I found Easy CD Creator just that, EASY! And I never get coasters using it on my system. I found it to be very reliable. Another reliable CD Burning software is Padus DiskJuggler, it's great for CD --> CD copying. Another plus is that it supports SMP.

It's not Easy CD Creator and Nero that have compatiability problems, It's Direct CD and Nero.

If your reread creifle's post, you'll see that he uninstalled Direct CD.

creifle, are you trying to burn to CDRW's that have been formated already with Direct CD?

Yea, 3bean, I thought of that. And yes to you're other statement. I had already learned from this forum to never install any other burn software along with DirectCD. My problem stems from not being able to write ANYTHING to the CDRW disk. So, logically, I thought maybe the disk needs to be formatted. But no program I have (Easy CD Creator, Nero, nor CDWrite) even has a format selection in the menus.
I bought the Smart N Friendlys over a year ago and just never used them. The package says nothing about preformat but I'm sure all disks sold today are preformatted.
I'm beginning to think my HP7100 is just TU (toes up). Maybe I need a Plextor. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif But I sure would like to get this running. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
