I read in a forum that socket 478 was preferable to the 423.
Isn't the 478 just to allow P4's to use SDram and if so does the 478 allow RamBus?

Thanks
Gerry

423 change to 478 has nothing to do with ram. The additional pins are for voltage to allow stablity at higher speeds beyond the 2.0gig limitation of the 423.

The 478 will work with Rambus, Sdram, or Ddr (although Sdram and low-speed ddr can put a major crimp in your speed). It's the motherboard that really restricts your choice of ram.

The 478s have a bigger L2 cache than 423, so between for example a 1.8 and a 1.8a(478), the A will have a bit more muscle.

Now don't confuse him with wrong info. Thats not right at all! The 423 is just a socket. It is extended to the 478 for the reasons I said. The williamette is on 423 and 478 socket it has less L2 cache. The Nortwood marked with a A is on the 423 and 478 aswell. The dif. is on the 478 the speed goes above 2gig. That is the only difference. There core change from Williamette to Northwood is on both socket 423 and 478 and ram solutions are the same for both. One is just older than the other!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

The L2 change is because of the core which moved from The Williamette L2 256k to Northwood L2 512k. The Northwood is also .13 fab and runs cooler. The A or Northwood is available on both the 423 and 478. You mistook a socket change for a core change. Hope you understand what I mean.

Form what I'm told its both up to 2gig. There is where the 423 dies!:( But I got 478 so oh-well!
