I recently purchased a new HDD (samsung 20gig 5400rpm) after my old one crashed. I've had this one about 2 months and I'm noticing a strange noise. Apart from the normal noise of the disk when it accesses I'm starting to hear a crackling noise. This happens mostly when the disk is processing large amounts of data. It sounds unusual and I'm not sure if it is just a noisy disk or if its a prelude to another crash?!?

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm just wondering if it is something to worry about... I guess I'm a little paranoid after the last crash.

hehe... yeah. I am glad it is under warranty! My worry is that it may be my system crashing the disks, so each time I get a new one it will bugger it up. Have a look at my system info. PLEASE anybody... If you know of a problem with anything that I have that causes HDD crashes... let me know!!! I'm in the dark as to why this is happening. It's only occured since I got win2k.... so I thought that the OS might be the cause, but surely there are no compatability issues with my setup!??! I haven't checked the HCL yet, but I'd still appreciate any help!

Thanks

yeah, well, i have a couple of 60 gig samsungs and they =- it-= sometimes makes what i would describe as a poppin sound at the very beginning of an access but it is intermittent and it lasts only a split second. I assumed it was normal for these drives. Now you got me worried. It sounds almost like a match striking...just one pop...is this the same sound you're gettin?
