Hi, I have an older computer i'm working on so i can have a "backup" one. When i wanted to see the CPU so i started to take of the heatsink/fan. Sounds easy right? From what i usally see THE FAN IS ATTACHED THE HEATSINK (in one WHOLE peice). I found out that the fan was really not a computer fan but a little exaust fan. The maker (apperantly) just took any old heatsink and then put the peice o' **** fan to pass it off. Well it's too late to take action now (over 4 yrs when i got it) but thats what i get! But surpisingly the cpu is not fryed....

Most CPUs _can_ run without a fan at all, albeit they wouldn't have a long life or any overclocking potential at all.

Also if the fan worked it worked, all it needs to do is push some air about. Any 80mm fan can do that, you don't been special computer fans or anything, a fan is a fan.

I just converted some old fans I ripped out of some appliances which were junk to case fans as it was free and only helped my system.

I just steal my case fans from Compusa....

CPU's from 4 years ago didn't need fans. Hell a year or 2 earlier, and you wouldnt even need a heatsink. Ans thermal pastes only came around a couple of years back too.

Because the cpu voltage was so low, the heat produced by the cpu was dissipitated by the surrounding air, meaning there was no need for a proper hs/f.

The 486 to be exact was when the need for a heatsink had arrisen. The Intel 486 66mhz I believe was the first to say "optional HS unit recomended". The 100mhz and such had HSF units generally.I had a 486 25mhz and a 33mhz that was bareback. Just ceramic cooled by surounding air. One fan which was the PSU fan and it blew air in not out. They were clearly not concerned about heat at all!:)

I would say later than the 486 with only HS.
I have a compaq 166 and a Dell 200Mmx both with no fans and oversized HS.

My 1.4Tbird is cooled by a Zalman. It essentially applies to the principal you were talking about, it is a huge HS and has a low CFM 92Mm fan pushing the air around.

What is the fastest CPU that you don't need a heatsink?

well you "can" run a 2.2ghz p4 with out a heatsink. It will only run at a very low mhz but with its built in heat technology it wont burn like my poor athlon...

what about those 2 cm. P4's? They have a HUGE heatsink for them.

when the p4 heat up they drop there speed, so instead of being 2.2 they will drop there speed to maybe 40mhz or 100mhz where heat is minimised with out crashing.

thats why I put those quotes around "CAN"

Well didn't you know that the new p4's have little feet and they can walk around your PC and fix things?. I mean its this new feature northwood was working on. 512 cache and the Feet. ;)

jk, but yes you can put in a p4 and turn your PC on.
