Well I have an old Dell and it seems the onboard HD controller has gone bad. I was thinking of buying a PCI HD controller card for it. But I have a question, will it work if the HD is hooked to the controller card and it is the only HD in the system? What I mean is will the computer be able to boot off of the HD hooked to the controller card?
Will this work?

Thanks

Yes it should work fine. In the boot up options you will normally have to change it to have "scsi" be the first boot device so something like

A:, Scsi, CD as the boot order instead of A:, C: CD

Hope that helped http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Hey Mntsnow, can you help me with mine? I can't W2k loaded on my new 40GB WD 7200 RPM drive. Keep getting a lot of .dll errors and application errors. Setup keeps stalling on certain files. Please help.

Which Card do you have? (maker and version?) Usually the best way is to install the OS using the normal IDE controller and then install the card and get the drivers installed correctly and THEN power down the system and change the drive over to the ata100 or ata66 controller and change the boot order to that which I listed above http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Promise ATA 100 build 17. I tried installing the W2k using the onboard IDE channel, but the same error. I have the Abit VT6X4 P3 733Mhz with 256 MB of ram. Also getting the instruction at *%^%*^* referenced. The memory could not be written. I know the bios supports the drive, but I have know idea what it could be. I had W2k with the same config except for the hard drive and a 128MB micron memory module PC133 that I swapped out; double sided to single sided.

Nope didn't work! During the copying of files, there were several .dll files it couldn't load. Any other options?

That is from the other thread....

Sounds like you need to start from scratch. Follow the install guides from promise's website.

I'm out of options. I have done this from beginning to end several times, but no answer. Thanks anyway for your help.

Please don't thread hop with a problem.

It's best to keep your troubleshooting issues in your thread, as it will be more effective for you and to those helping.

It's also intrusive to the original poster of this thread.

Of course, if you have similar issues, you can trade ideas to help each other out with comparable issues and/or possible solutions, and/or post links to your thread.

It works just fine for me.
I use a Promise Ultra 100 card with:
IBM Deskstar 75GXP (45GB)
Seagate Baracuda (27.3GB)
under windows 2000.
