this weekend, i was helping a friend refomat his computer and loading drivers. When it came to the internet, I could not get aol (yes slow aol) to recognize the modem in the computer. First of all i had to tell the computer what the modem was becuase it could not even detect it either . Finally, i was able to get windows to recognize the modem, and i was like great...now aol should have no problem. When i boot up AOL 6.0 it starts its search and after a while it stops with an error message that says "Hardware conflict, check your configuration ERROR 1006" does anyone have any clue on how to fix this problem so my friend can get back on the internet.

plz help if you can
thanks

Boot to safe mode.
Remove the modem(s) and all com ports.
Restart, and go into BIOS setup.
Disable com 2, set PnP OS to NO.
Restart, reinstall modem (windows should detect it PnP style).
Get AOL to find it using the exact parameters as device mangler (IRQ, etc.)

System Specs (i.e., mobo, processor, etc.), specifically do you have a SoundBlaster card? What OS is this (Win98, ME, 2000)? And what brand/model modem?
1. Go into Control Panels>System. Under Device Manager, check to make sure there's no exclamation marks next to the modem. If there is, resolve that issue.
2. Control Panels>Modems. There should be a button that makes Windows run basic diagnostics on the modem. If they fail, there's no way your modem can connect. And that means that it isn't installed correctly, or has a conflict, or just won't work anymore.

Couple of questions: Are you using any NIC cards in this system? If so, have you told AOL exactly which device to use (it'll never figure it out on its own)?
The whole problem could be an IRQ conflict. You also might want to try removing all the modem drivers, moving the modem to a different slot, and reinstalling the drivers. That might fix it.
Right now that's all I can think of . . . I'll be checking tonight on my 56k modem using aol 5.0 to dial up.
Good luck!
