Let me preface this challenge with the following story:

Just ordered a premade box for my partner. Cost me $1499 (incl. shipping). She wanted a great graphics and gaming computer, so we ordered one. We're getting another computer this summer, and I would love to try to build it myself. I'm tired of being subjected to companies' decisions on what should be inside my computer. I'm also tired of paying for poor service and dealing with orders and shipping on big items.

I've never done this before, so I really don't know if it's possible to meet this price point. Here is the spec of the premade:

1 GHz Athlon Socket A

EPOX VIA 8KTA2 K7 KT 133 ATA100 4x AGP mobo

128 MB RAM PC133

ATI Radeon 64 MB DDR AGP

30 gig 7200 rpm UIDE-66/100 HD

12X DVD-ROM

Sony floppy drive

6306 ATX mid tower case 250 watt

SB Live! sound card

outsourced 17" monitor

Windows ME OS (barebones, no bundle)

Ok, here's the challenge: Can I meet/beat this system if I build myself? Or, rather, can YOU meet/beat this system? C'mon, Sysopt, show me there is a light at the end of the dark premade computer tunnel!!

Bottom line....YES http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
1279.00 and that is not the lowest prices I could have found. Everything as you spec'd using a Maxtor HD, Pioneer DVD (16x) and ADI for the monitor (since you didnt list manufacturers for these parts)

You mean, there's hope?? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I'd like to see some price points folks have met with comparable systems. Anyone?
