Does anybody have any links or references regarding forcing a different bios onto a motherboard? A quick search on google doesn't yield any fruitful information. I've been thinking about this idea for awhile now and basically, I hate knowing I can't overclock my Dell PII-350MHz machine because they put their own bios on the board. SoftFSB won't work because it doesn't have my pll. I know the motherboard is an Intel SE440BX. Has anyone tried this firsthand? Again, links to pertinent information would be great.

I tried putting an Abit BX-6 BIOS into an Abit BP-6 machine and it would NOT boot.
If you want to overclock then you will need to replace your motherboard with something more user friendly.

I know where you're coming from Sterling_Aug. I'm more than willing to take a chance to do every last tweak I can to this old system. If I kill the motherboard, I know I can always swap it out with a newer one that is more overclocking-friendly. BTW, when you put the BX-6 bios onto your BP-6 mobo, did your motherboard die or were you able to switch the bios back to normal and still have a functioning system?

It can't be done. The bios is written for the specific hardware layout of the motherboard. There are companies that will create a new bios for you and send you the chips, possibly with some additional features.

namrak: I was able to take the BIOS chip out of the dead system and "hot flash" it using another working system. The restore worked perfectly and both motherboards are still functional.

There was a book out about a year or 2 ago at B&N.It was I believe for overclocking or bioses. In the last chapter it descibed in detail a lot about how to write your own bios and tweak it.I've looked for it again but couldn't find it.

The structure of the IC's itself is most probably very different.
Even pin out's are usually different. If you want to try other bios chip's, make it be of the same brand/pinout and for mobos with equivalent chipsets.
