I have a Dell Dimension
600 P3
128 pc100
13 GB HDD
I have my drive partitioned with 1 primary at 6.5GB and 1 extended at 6.5GB with win98se on the first, and win2000 advanced server edition on the extended.
Last night I ran Norton 2001 speed disk,(on the primary drive) followed up by system optomization.
When I rebooted I got invalid system disk, insert valid system disk and press any key to continue. Well, there is no disk in,floppy or cd.
I was thinking I could boot to safe and recover from there, but f8 takes me right to win2000 safe mode menu. When I start up, right after POST, I'm given a boot menu.If I choose win98se, I immediately get invalid system disk error,(no time for f8,f5). Should I boot disk to DOS and run a scanreg or something? When I tried this I got a message scanreg couldn't run without himem.sys in config.sys so I put it in and same message......ugh!! Need a couple hints.

I've only been into this alittle, so any suggestion I give MIGHT screw you up more. BUT......... you might try booting w/an up-to-date W98 boot floppy with Sys.com on it, and typing from the a: prompt:
Sys c:
I'm not sure if this will alter the W2K dual-boot MBR or not. If NOT, it would probably solve the W98 booting problem. Wait for more help.

It sounds as if Norton overwrote something. Do you have the ERD's (Emergency Repair Disks) that you were promted to create during the install of 2K? You should be able to recreate the boot record with those disks. If you dont have them then you might have to reinstall Win98 (over the top of existing install of 98) and then "repair" the Win2K install with the Win2K cd

There is an issue with speed disk 2001 on a dual boot system usually only if Partition Magic was used to set the drive up.
I can't find the Symantec article right now because I found it before thru there "ask Symantec" section, and that part of the site is down right now.
The fix involved using Norton Disk editor to move a boot file back into the boot sector of the first partition.
I have the same kind of setup and have a floppy prepared with the necessary Disk editor files because I was worried it also may happen to me.
I'm looking for the KB article number because I thought I printed it out.
I'll be sure to post back if I find it.

Well I found one that sounds like this will help prevent it from happening in the future but I am still looking for the one that DaveH mentioned

Here is the article I was talking about.
The Symantec site has a new look and format, that must be why the "Ask Symantec" section was not working.
I was searching earlier but couldn't find this article listed in there regular KB.
Unable to boot into Windows 9x after running Speed Disk on dual boot Windows 2000 system (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nunt.nsf/docid/2000030910264409&src=w)
I hope this helps struggles, If you have any problems with finding the Disk Editor utility or setting it up on a boot floppy, please feel free to contact me directly.

Thanks alot for your help Dave and other members.
Wasn't quite sure what went wrong. It definitely makes sense seeing as I did use Partition Magic to split my drive.I guess you learn something new everyday.
Dave, not familiar with Disk editor but I'll try and figure it out. Thanks again,I owe ya one!
