When I dial up on my 56k, I can connect to the internet, but only for a short time. I can't even load up the home page before the thing disconnects. I would normally think that it's the ISP, however, I have another computer that connects to the same ISP and stays connected.

Should I just buy a new 56k? or can I fix it somehow?

This means I can't connect to sysopt! rut roh!!

Check the idle settings in internet options. It may be set to disconnect after a certain time of being idle. If it isn't that then I guess it may well be your modem. Check your drivers and run a diagnostic (if you can) on your modem.

Another possibility is that you are using the incorrect password to login to your ISP. Check that, check the number you are dialing etc etc... make sure everything is setup just right. Can you switch the modem with the one on your other computer. You may be able to narrow down the problem this way.

Check the phone line for noise too.

I have had a similar issue with win 9X and XP.

the crappy copper phone lines i have between me and the central office are old. I cannot stay connected on a 56k conexant/rockwell/software modem at all, at my previous addy i was on fibre phonelines and did excellent.

I had to get a hardware based external modem. 33.6 for me to fix mine.
but now I have DSL so i use 33.6 as backup.

Be sure and check for corroded phone jacks,
bad inside wiring
have a line test run from telco
besure you have quality twisted pair phone lines in house
have the latest Drivers for modem installed. (back up old ones in case it is worse)

if you can find an INIT extra modem commands try and bump it down to V.34 (as i did) and if it works it prolly is phone lines.

as you did not state your OS and anything about your system other than modem probs, this is all i can think of now
Hope this helps!

Well, my OS is XP Pro, it's a conexant modem and here's the issue:

I was able to use the modem with no problems before, then one night, bang, it just wouldn't work.

If more is required, I'll gladly post. Thanks.

Remove all Network Properties items and then the drivers for the modem. Reinstall the modem and protocols after a restart. Check the darned line for noise! That should always be the first thing you do.

If I had a Conexant Winmodem, I'd give it away to an enemy.

Bad modem I take it?
I was thinking about buying a new 56k anyway.
If by noise you mean the connection noises, then yes they are there.

Well, even tho i have probs with meh puter this i have seen.

do as Bill says and reinstall the modem.
I have seen badweather fry a modem, or somethimes the phone company will work on a line and mess it up (even if it is nowhere near your house)
Conexant or "controllerless" modems use your CPU to do the work a modem does thus taxing your system more.

I reccomend a "hardware" based modem not a "software" based modem i can't think of any brands or model Numbers off hand now, but USR makes a great hardwarebased modem.
i had one before DSL but i still had to run it in 33.6 mode to connect due to pee poor copper lines.

if in doubt about a modem i uses this test when u dial or modem is initalized or diconnect your mouse pointer "freezes" a bit this is the CPU throwing all it's money at the modem at that time.
a good HW modem shouldn;t have that happen.

I always wondered why winamp would be skippy (on any song) when I dialed up. And how did you get 33.6 out of a 56k? On my **** lines, I get 26.4k as THE very best...usually 24.0k or 14.0k; pretty bad, huh?

Thanks for the advice, I hope it works!:)
