Modem slows to crawl?

I,m on 56k and the last month or so I start out at the usual 40somthing k and after an hour or so it will be down to like 18 to 20 or so k then it will really fall off to about 5 to 10 k I'ts a new pc, I took out the card and It,s dated 10-99 (lucent win slowdem) I rolled back the drivers, un installed then re installed, updated to the newest one. disconnected the line from the ups. I'm down to replacing it but before I do I wondered if anyone has had this problem before? I can't be the only one. Please help I,m getting bored fast watching the paint dry!!!

Connect a phone to the line and pick up the receiver. Dial 1 and listen. Do you hear noise? If so, you have the problem.

yea.. bill is right.. its more than likely interference in the lines.. dial 1 to get rid of the dial tone and see if u hear any static or anything at all... if u can hear something.. then thats whats causing ur slow downs..
