How many other icons are appearing before the MSN one? In other words, do you have a lot of useless **** running in the background? Things like RealPlayer, ICQ, Creative stuff...you know - fluff.
If so, use MSCONFIG.EXE > Startup to idle some of those processes.

Another good place to check is www.tweakxp.com there is a good walk through about adjusting the read ahead on your ram...makes XP boot up quite a bit faster! For instance from power button to no hd activity in XP takes my computer about 15secs :) Plus I don't have anything in my startup...so that's helpful too.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the response, i'll check the info on thoses links as soon as i get home and post the results here.
Bill: i just installed XP 2 days ago and nothing yet. I don't even have an anti virus running at the moment (didn't realise norton 2001 doesn't works on xp).

Was this an upgrade or fresh installation? What CPU/Memory combo are you running?

Like i said in my first post, it is a fresh intsallation. Currently running a P3 800, 128 Mhz. My friend on a 500 seems to have his xp load faster, but is not running XP pro.
I switched off some of the services Alnath suggested and it now the messenger icons instantly when my background loads and it take me 45 sec before i can actually do anything. Gonna look at the whole list when i get home today.
Thanks for th help guys,
