hello,
I got my new Hedgehog HSF and I was installing it and I put a tad too much thermal Paste. I had to take off the heatsink and while doing so I craked the side of the core (I think) I was very scared. I I took of some of the paste and cleaned off the bottom of the hSF and reinstalled the HSF I put my case back on the desk and turned it on.... I went into the bios everything is fine.. I let it boot up and it detected my CPU as a ATHLON 1000Mhz I started breathing again.
now I getting some funky temps around 53c at idle! is this normal? I havent checked it with a load yet.
thanks..
phew!

right now i have the fan set too sucking. theres no shroud.
Im getting some graphics problems in 3dmark2000 that i never had before. is it the video card?
im in the 55c-60C range I dont want to take off the heatsink again. what can i do?

Well first about your graphics problem. If you haven't had that problem before then it's probably the 55C+ temps you are getting. Second, I would put that shroud on there and see what it does.
Best of luck http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I too had the same problem. I first set up the Hedgehog 238 for blowing. That gave me higher temps.
I then set up the Hedgehog 238 for sucking the heat. It worked much better and I am happy that I have this heatsink.
As for the shroud, make sure you have that installed on the heatsink also. It makes a difference in temps!

Im still haveing problems I took off a quite a bit of thermal compund now theres very little. I dont know if that could be the problem tho.
How can I take off the heatsink without damaging the hsf.
thanks

Is your m/b an A7V by any chance?
Ive run an A7V and KT7 side by side same coolers and processors...A7V reports dramatically higher temps at all times...
(oh yeah, ya didnt flip the clip around did ya???)

Umm i think its on BACKWARDS!!!! according to the instructions i was suposed to put it the other way around! I have to take it off now http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif this wont be fun http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif and yes my Mobo is a A7V I guess it is misreporting temps! cuz i was getting around 50c with my super orb. I thought that was not right. but why am i getting funky effects with 3dmark2000 the colors are all screwed up. My other games run fine tho.
also how and i supposed to get the HSF off without damaging the cpu. Im kinda scared too take it off. I dont want to destroy my CPU i dont think they would accept a exchange. what i would like to know is why is the mobo saying that my temps are higher than with the super orb. is that because the clip is backwards?
thanks

Hey yer no dummy---I think if you look the clip it has a slightly offset "pressure point" make sure its over the cpu's core for best results, (believe me you aint the first to flip it) Newer bios for A7V reports temps differently, plus there is an question about the actual dip setting for proper fsb's...id say gettin the fan direction sorted out as well as the clip and paste issues will assist...

voogru, if you have the fan set to suck, MAKE SURE you have the shroud on, if you have it set to blow, take the shroud off. The reason for this is that the shroud forces the fan to suck air from further down the heatsink fins, otherwise it just sucks it from the top of the fins and not where all the heat really is. As for the paste, they recomend putting as little as possible, you don't need alot of it to do the job just enuff to fill any small gaps, but i wouldn't be worried about having alittle too much either, as the paste should be made not to conduct electricity, but it is a waste as it is not needed.
Hey i have an idea, lets fill up the inside of a case with artic silver for greater total system cooling.....maybe not..

I got it rebuilt and its working just fine! I took a closer look at the core of th CPU and it had some metal stuff showing and some other **** i cant describe. I put the paste back on and poped the hsf back o. im still having problems in 3dmark but everything else is fine. I only got problems AFTER i kinda busted the CPU. should i try and get an exchange for the CPU? is it worth it? Im gonna check there return policies and see what i can do.
I still worrid bout the CPU and I have a big headache for banging My head on the wall ( im not kidding!)
thanks.

good news! I let the cop sit there for a while and It is now reporting 49c im estimating that the real temp is 39c http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif so I guess the upgrade was worth it!
im gonna try the 3dmark one more time.
thanks

hello,
I found out why i had crappy grapics in 3dmark... It was the Friggin Video Card drivers!!! i downdated them and 3dmark ran fine! Im still wondering what the hell did i damage all the bench marks are about the sameI didnt notice any decrease in speed what did i damage? just a piece of plastic?
I dunno but the next time I take off the heatsink is when im gonna upgrade my cpu. around this time next year http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
