I'm some what confused about what the Rear and Line-Out Jacks on my SB Live! 1024 actually do?
As far as I can tell the Line-Out (lime coloured) supports Speakers, Ext. Amps and Headphones and the Rear-Out (Black coloured) supports just Speakers and Ext. Amps.
Why is this and what for?

I would suggest going to SB homepage and look up your model. they have a very good breakdown of all the cards.
good luck!

The 'rear' plug is for surround sound. You can hook up another set of stereo speakers behind you to get a very good surround sound effect. The line-out is for connecting your sound card to a stereo or other line-level components. Think of the line out as being just like the composite (red and white) stereo connectors on your ear-drum blaster. As a matter of fact, you can get a cable from Radio Shack that will convert the 'mini-DIN' (headphone jack style) connector to the composite to make it easier for you to send the audio out to your stereo, or have the line-level signal of your stereo or other audio component input into your sound card.
