Just curious. I played with my FSB speed this morning. I have an Athlon XP 1800, Epox 8KHA+, 256MB DDR Kingston, and a Ti200 AGP card.

Since my Volcano 7+ and conductive not yet arrive, I decided to play with the FSB.

The BIOS goes up to 200(Very unlikely for anyone to get it there), but I tried 145 first, booted, ran WinXP, then crashed during 3dmark2001.

CPU temp never got over 42C with the loud obnoxious Alpha HSF.

So my question is this. Do you O'C the CPU or FSB or a stable combination of both? Right now I have it rock solid at 143FSB @ 38C idle. How can you get these things to post above 150FSB? I know heat is not the issue.

I've tried upping the Core V. and nothing seems to help.

When you raise your FSB speed, you also raise the AGP, PCI, NIC, and USBus speeds because your divider stays the same. Also, if you're running CAS2 memory @ CAS2, change the setting to CAS3 to improve OC limits.

I prefer to OC using only multiplier settings. That way the only component in the equation is the CPU. I can OC my GPU seperately. PCI and USB devices don't tolerate OC very well. This is where you'll most likely see instability.

Unlocking the muliplier on the XP is a bit more involved than the Athlon T'bird, but it's possible. Many good how to's online. Hope this helps...

There are boards out there that let you up the bus speed while keeping yoru pci/agp in spec. If you are up for upgrading the board (i personally wouldn't seeing it is not that old) the Iwill XP333-R is one of those boards. Tere are MANY others, just hit the various sites on the net and read reviews. The best part about this, is you can OC you CPU without having to unlock it. I dont' care what anyone says, XPs are a pain to unlock

Yes, there are many good guides online to help you overclock, including Sysopt's own guide here. (http://www.sysopt.com/articles/athlonoc/index2.html)
Like what missiveusa has mentioned, when you overclock by the fsb, you increase the speed at which all your peripherals attached to the bus work at. This may introduce instability issues which varies among the different type. As an example, my Netgear FA-310TX NIC doesn't like being overclocked above a 112fsb for my Pentium III 500MHz. It simply quits seeing any network I'm attached to. Currently, I run at a 115fsb for 575MHz, but I need to drop down to 560MHz to be able to LAN with this pc. For my Duron 1GHz@1.235GHz, I've unlocked the multiplier and can achieve 1.25GHz easily strictly through overclocking the cpu. But this does not help to take advantage of any PC133 memory (I'm using a Asus A7V133 mobo here). So I underclock my proc to a 9.5 multiplier and overclock the fsb to 130. Why not 133? I seem to be having some trouble with stability issues. More testing needs to be done here.
