I am working on an older Pionex Pentium classic 133 computer. The modem try's to connect to the Internet but can not because dial up networking says there something wrong with the configuration settings. I can't find anything screwy in the settings.
Using Windows 95B. Modem, a ViVA 33.6. I can hear it dial while
it does it verification thing, but then it stops. Can not find server,
check your configuration settings. I think the problem is that it's
shown on com port 5 and not com port 1 or 2 but there is never any error message to that fact. There is no yellow exclamation marks in device manager. Windows has detected this modem. I having a brain cramp on this one. What about the internet connection setup? Nothing seems to work at this point and yes I installed a new modem and it was never detected, but was listed in device manger. HHHHHH E LP! Suggestions please.

Are you sure you have configured the dial up networking correctly? Have you the primary and secondary DNS IP addresses correctly set?

It seems to me that the problem occurrs when your system is attempting to negociate a connection with the remote ISP system which sounds more like an incorrect DUN setup than a hardware conflict.

If you ring your ISP helpline they will be able to tell you the correct settings for your Dial Yp Networking

Another thing to check 1966, is to make sure that your modem doesn't cut out on you before actually connecting with your ISP. There is a setting where you can set the amount of time that passes before having the modem cut out or redial. I don't think there's anything wrong with your modem if you can actually hear it dialing out. Sorry if I couldn't be more specific on the actual setting.

Thanks for your suggestions and response. The dns setting were set at one time to match the same settings I am using on this computer right now. At the present the settings on the problem
computer were changed by the internet connection wizard. It asked if I wanted to keep those dns settings or let icw do it auto-maticaly.Since Ive tried most everything I know I let it looking to see it that would help. Iwill go back and put it back in. I also wondered if the modem was actually completing the call. I do plan to call the ISP but I have been there before over time and that can be a super hassle but they usually get it. What about the com ports? Does it need to be on 1 or 2?

It doesn't matter which com port it's on. Once it works that is fine.

It does really sound to me like the DUN is just not correctly set.

I agree but for the life of me I don't see it. I will have the ISP walk
me thru it and double check. I will keep you informed.
