Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : What is SmartDrive and how do I get it? Petros 12-18-2000, 03:41 PM Thanks! OuTpaTienT 12-18-2000, 03:49 PM It's a disk cache program for use in DOS mode. It comes with Windoze. So, two things: 1.) You already have it. 2.) I doubt very seriously you need it. btw, the file is named smartdrv.exe Petros 12-18-2000, 03:58 PM I am trying to install Win2000 from my hardrive. I did the winnt /b thing and it said that I should run smartdrive to speed up the process. Is it on the Win98 cd somewhere? EDIT - Found it. Thanks! [This message has been edited by Petros (edited 12-18-2000).] NDC 12-18-2000, 06:33 PM For your future reference: The message you are getting at the beginning of the Win2K installation is not asking you to load smartdrv.exe, the SMART feature can be automatically enabled by booting straight from the Win2K CDROM. Booting from a Windows Boot Disk and typing WINNT from the i386 directory will take significantly longer Vs. booting from Win2K CDROM with SMART feature enabled. How much of a difference you ask? about 30 minutes on an installation on a P3-450Mhz. If you want to see for yourself what I'm talking about, try the installation both ways, and you will know exactly what I'm talking about. As for the command you typed winnt /b The /b switch applies on NT4 installation, it is not a valid switch on Win2K installation. You just type winnt from the i386 directory. But like I mentioned above, it's much faster installing Win2K by booting straight from the Win2K CDROM if your BIOS supports this feature. I just thought that I'd let you know. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif SysOpt.com
