Just when i thought they could not get any faster Yamaha has a 16x write speed burner out. I was about to get a Plextor with burn proof but now I'll have to wait untill they get their 16x model out. can it really get any faster? http://www.yamaha.com/cgi-win/webcgi.exe/DsplyModel/?gHDR00007CRW2100EZ

Whoever thought CD-ROMs would get to 72x? I bet "back in the day", people thought 4x was flying http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Pfff I remember when the 1x speed CDROMS came out and I got one. It had a caddy =) Then I stepped up to 4x, 8x, 24x, 40x. Yamaha is a good brand, I consider them even with Plextor.

They can and they will! If you wait long enough, they'll be obsolete and opto-chemical processors will be in vogue. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

TDK (http://www.tdk.com/velocd-new/16index.html) beat all - even the Plextor - in the Jan 01 issue of MaximumPC.

I'm very happy w/my 12/10/32S Plexi http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Yea but the faster they are the noisier it is. I much prefer 32x over 48x it seem like 32 is faster too for some reason. Because 48x seem to drop down to 6x after a spinup.
48x uses two mode, turtle mode and turbo mode which only last for a few sec when it start to read then drop to turtle speed for the rest of the duration. This is why my 48 only sustain about 1meg/sec, while my 32x does 2mb/sec. They should be much faster but they're rated much higher then it is.

i had a tdk before i got my plex. the tdk touted to be the the fastest available blah blah, but it turns out that in order to get the speed they boasted you had to use their software and i was never able to get any other burning software to work with it. i wasn't happy with it at all. anyone here have any good experiences with the tdk?

One of my friends has the TDK veloCD, not sure which speed he has tho, he had some trouble getting it to work at first but is working fine now. As for TDK's claim that most burners have hurendous audio extraction, i have a ricoh 6x4x24x IDE. Using the program on their page i get a audio extraction speed of 11x, which isn't too bad considering this burner is fairly outdated now. Also as for their claim about its not unusual for burners to have 30% quality rip or woteva they are crapping on about, using the "read twice" verification i got zero errors and when verifying by checksum i also got zero errors. Also considering i have a dinosaur of a computer (p1 133) that could also slow down the dae alittle i would think. I also tried my cd-rom drive, just as ancient as my cpu, didn't support dae which is no surprise.
