My friend is running windows 98 second edition on his computer and is having trouble with his internet. No matter what internet application he tries to run, it crashes out with an "internal error". I know its the settings on his network but am not sure how to take care of it. He has a single computer network which only purpoes is to connect to WAN. I uninstalled and reinstalled his network card. I purged the IP config in dos and renewed them. But that did nothing. I am not too familar with this system. For windows xp all one does is install a network card and renew the ip addresses and everything is fine. But that isn't the case here. Is there something else you must do. How does one go about setting up this network on win 98 or fix this problem I have the ip addresses automatically detected so I know its not that kind of problem. In dos at ipconfig /all it shows all the information correctly except ip routing is enabled. I dont think this should be enabled. How do you take care of this. Also, should Dhcp and WINS proxy be enabled. How do I fix this? Any help = thanks in advance.

I don't know if you're talking about internet or just a network/server config.
But here is a very good guide to make a quick check as to routing, hub, connections etc.:

Open Network Properties and remove all items there. Restart. Most likely, Windows will reinstall fresh versions of Client for MS Networks and TCP/IP when the NIC is reinstalled. Now you have fresh files and a new TCP/IP "stack".

Try again. Try all browsers and games that access the net. Isolate the troublesone application(s).

If he's using IE, go to Add/Remove Programs and make to uninstall IE. Choose Repair.

He just has a simple etherner connection to the internet. He goes out of an ethernet network card to his cable modem.

Reinstall as bill says.Go to TCP/IP properties for the network card, view the properties.Disable WINS resolution or select use DHCP for WINS resolution.
Go to TCP/IP for cable device enable DHCP for WINS resolution.

-Not a complete posting on all you need for Win98 TCP/IP, dial up networking, etc.
Suggest you see the Web site how to's for the cable or ISP for directions on how to setup all for internet.

Whoops:
With exception to removing the stuff from Network neigborhood.
You're talking about reinstalling that stuuf if you do.
Win98 won't "refresh" anything.
See:
http://grc.com/su-rebinding9x.htm
And check out the graphics which show you some of Win98 screens. You don't have to rebind all for security as described but you can.
This all asumes "Dial-up networking" is installed.
Start menu, control panel,add/remove programs, windows setup, communications,dial-up networking and vpn is how to get installed if you don't have network neighborhood icon on desktop. Also the setup program for your ISP/Cable should do all these for you.
