I was asked about a problem that occured when the user plugged in their new Palm - they said they did not install any software yet (not sure if that is true) and the manual told them to re-boot their system. When they booted - the OS got to the point where you see the background picture but nothing else.
There are no desktop icons, no toobar, and no mouse response (other than the movement, no click) You can CTL + ALT + DEL and it brings up the usual dialog. When you check the applications, there is nothing present. The processes appear to have the usual.
When you try to power down the pc, you get the message, "Explorer.exe" is not responding. You have to hold the power button for 8 seconds to totally power off the pc.

I only spoke to the person on the phone and they are not very pc literate so it is quite difficult to explain some things as well as get good responsive feedback on the situation.

> It sounds like a software conflict, but they say they didn't install anything.

> I tried to start explorer.exe from the "START NEW PROCESS" in the task manager, however that did not work...just an hour glass then no repsonse

> The PDA is no longer connected to the tower

Any one have any ideas? Or something else to try. I will try to get them into SAFE mode later on, but I tried and they could not get it to go into it (user error most likely)

THANKS for any feedback!!

I assume that this is a USB issue:
