I remember someone telling me that the more programs you have installed, the slower the computer will run. It seems to me, that the more programs you have running, the slower the computer will run. Assuming that you're not taking space away from the swap file, that is.
However, I just did a fresh install on my computer, and I noticed that things did seem to run smoother... Is it my imagination? What are your experiences with this?

sometimes when you install programs they install files that run in the background. defraging helps even know the defrager for win95 and 98 are pure ****. also any anti- virus or anything with the name norton your gonna have a major slow down. depends on what type of hard drive, how much ram and your processor speed. plus broken link files don't help much either. or left over files from unistalling.

lol Zero - don't like norton either http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Szech - I have never heard of that. Ever. I have read numerous articles in Max PC and tons more posts here about memory usage and have never heard of that concept. Only in GroundZero's scenarios would I think that installed programs would be suspect. Although I could be wrong.

I have a fairly large number of programs on my computer including CAD programs. I also have a fairly high number (15), things running in the background. (I'm running a 800MHz Athlon with 128MB PC133 and Win98SE.)
Where I really picked speed back up and gained a lot of stability was when I removed Internet Explorer and then re-installed the IE 5.0 core on top. (30Mb out, 8Mb in) In other terms, I'm now running 98Lite!
If your wondering how to remove IE, I used a program called IErad31 which you can find at
www.98lite.com (http://www.98lite.com)

Well, I can`t say having lots of **** installed would cause slow down. Of course, defragging regular will help.
Generally, installed apps will not slow down a system. Apps running in the background would certainly affect system performance!
As an example, when I install WinME, it runs very fast! as soon as I get all my apps installed, it is generally slower. Once all my stuff is installed though, I have some 15 icons in the system tray, and probably 20 or more tasks running all the time........
Can`t have all that running without a performance hit!

Just making your working folders (c:\windows, c:\windows\system) and your registry bigger is going to slow down file access & retrival, and registry access even if nothing additional is running. That's what you're seeing, Szech.

my computer doesnt seem to run slower at all even if i have milion of stuff installed. it depend how many program you are running at the same time when booting up which may cause it to take longer to boot into windows but shouldn't affect benchmark. in your cases it must be your harddrive having a hard time loading all those program that you have set to run in startup folder. win95 seem to be much faster but I much prefer win98 or even SE. more feature, slower loading time.

BFlurie is correct. I try not to install anything on my main computer unless I plan on using it a lot! (q2,RS,CS,etc.)

Starting on "System Stability" you will find some good opinions on resourses.
Cheers!
