This is my second around the clock day that I have not been able to petition, format, or install Win2k on this Maxtor 26GB @ 7200rpm HD. I have even download MaxBlater to help install this drive. Maxtor utilites test and run this drive as being "OK"., but maxtor has limitation as to how it will petition and format this drive, which everytime I use it Win2K will not read and in Fdisk the drive is formatted not set as active - you name it, everything except format and petition for the correct size. Maxtor use E-Z BIOS to see the drive.
1, First, Fdisk with not set the petition pass 2014, System =UNKNOWN

2. When I install Win2K it sees the drive as unallocated and will not petition it pass 8050, or it see it at 7.78GB.

When I did get Win2K to install on the drive it reboot to start up an error message no boot sector found c:\nt or something, I am not sure the this has happen everytime I have installed

This HD was running in my sys as C: and I am trying to do a fresh install because of a device problem.

Win2k, Gigabyte 7DXR MOB, AMD 1.33, 521Ram, 32Mb Video Card

Would the MOB Bios be doing this? What???

Its late and my head is spining - Thanks

Was it a freshly bought drive, or was it previously in another machine?

I know some drives cant be partitioned very easily, a friend of mine had an old 5 gig drive (quite a time ago) from Packard Bell, and couldnt get rid of their settings.

I think it is propping up his computer desk as we speak :)

It is the HD from this computer for the last year or so. Running Win2k. Maxtor utilitiy came with E-Z BIOS . This programs reports the the current BIOS is reading the cyclers wrong. Another utility shows it found:

Microsoft/IBM extened BIOS
EBIOS characteristics (C/H/S): 0/64/63
Total capacity 0 MB

What BIOS is this? Is this MOB or HD or somthing else. Is it upgradable/Flashable?

Thanks

This may be a stupid question but are you booting from the cd when trying to install W2K. The reason I am asking is that there is no fdisk option when installing W2K. During the installation there are options for deleting and setting partitions but they are not the same as setting up W98 from DOS using fdisk. Also you can setup the primary partition and install W2K then after the installation is complete go into computer management located in administrative tools and setup other partitions and format them.

For some reason the CD will not install unless I use the BootDisk to start the installion. This is not a upgrade CD, that is just the way it has been from day one.

Thanks

Live and Learn
Up and running with the format, called Maxtor Tech Supp, the jumpers had another option for this HD and the tech support set the jumper to the right placement. Win2K installed and I am off the the races.

Thanks
