Hi,
I was thinking on going with a pentium chip because of the lower wattage power supply I figure it will use less juice and I want to leave it on all the time.
Any comments would be welcome.

I'd go with the pentium. I have a friend thats usuing 5 p-100's in a cascade type server. And it works great!
The Athlons are more suited to 3d aplications to. Were as the Pentiums are more of an all around chip.

Mark,
Give a few more detail's, is it going to be on all the time processing all the time? Is it going to be on all the time sitting idle most of the time?
Are you concerned about the power requirements of your P.S.U., your electricity bill, heat, efficiency or stability?
All the best, Justy.

Here's a few more details:
I plan on leaving the server on all the time connected to the Inet via DSL, however; it's primary purpose will be development. I expect low traffic (friends and family mostly) so it will be idle most of the time. My main concern is power consumption. How do you figure how many watts are being consumed when a box is sitting idle?
Thanks for your interest,
Mark

This is a difficult one to answer, that is, there are so many contributing factors. The perverbial " how long is a piece of string".
i.e.
Mobo's Energy saving capabilities;
CPU power consumption;
Screen consumption, and power saving function's ( leave turned on/off ? );
HDD consumption, and spin down capabilities;
Cooling requirment's, basically fan consumptions;
I/O, Video card etc... consumption;
The list goes on depending on what you require.
The difference in the overall power being used, can be reduced by going with the minimum power spec's for all of the above.
This is a real can of worm's when you start getting into it, what CPU's exactly are you thinking off, and what is the minimum spec's you would accept for, Mobo, peripherals, screen, etc.
All the best, Justy.

Justy,
Thanks for the detailed analysis. Unfortunately my choices are limited. The components will be the least expensive I can find. Only the type of CPU is up in the air.
Again thanks,
Mark
