Hi guys,
I'm in Naples Florida now.
I brought my Laptop over and thought I would give some free ISP's a chance but they all didn't work. :-(
I tried Freelane by Excite and it worked on sunday but it didn't work after that (it doesn't accept my user-name and password??)
I tried bluelight.com but it doesn't have a local access number (although their website said they had one!!!)
What others are there that are any good??
cool

Can't remember which member posted this link, lots of choices: http://www.nzlist.org/user/freeisp/
One by one they seem to be getting taken over and ceasing to be free. NetZero is the only one that seems dedicated to remaining free.

Wouldn't bother with since 22 buck a month isn't all that much. NONE of them would give U an easy time. Pay the only way to go if you want reliable service, if it sound too good to be true then it maybe. No banner for me, and no hassle. AMEN.

Be thankfull your not in the UK. We don`t even get free local calls, so our Net bills are huge!
4p a min from 8am to 6pm. 1p a min from 6pm till 8am. 1p a min Friday 6pm to Monday 8am.
How does £180 a month sound for a Net bill? Just guessing, but I reckon that`s about $260 a month in the US!
See! You got it easy........
Lucky buggers!
Hey Variable--
I've also been on the move a lot lately, and was using FreeLane, and it worked pretty well. I used it in NY, MS, and TX. Then, I got an email from them saying they were reorganizing, and their service might be unavailable after Dec 10th. Yesterday, I got an email from them saying I needed to get the latest version in order to use it. You might go see if you can get the latest one.
I wish I could be more specific, but I can't get into my friggin' Hotmail! I'll try again later and post the info they sent. Best of luck!

Maybe that's why freelane worked on sunday but not afterwards (and I downloaded their new software for 1 1/2 hours on sunday all for nothing).
Right now I'm on with Juno but they didn't work the whole afternoon. §"$%"§$
I don't mind an ad-banner and a slow connection if it's free and if I can get on when I want (always).
At home I have a DSL-connection (costs about 25$) but in the holidays I don't really need a fast Internet-Connection but a reliable one.
I will try this NetZero Service.

I like Winfire. It offers a free dial up account until you get the free dsl line installed or available in your area. Of course the free dsl is low speed (around 130k) with advertising and you are committed to buying a modem ($200)- so its not totally free.

Try this link for all of the different ones (it's from the www.refdesk.com (http://www.refdesk.com) site, which is great): http://www.refdesk.com/freenet.html
I personally have cable, but I help about 8 different family members with their computer needs, and I put them all on Bluelight. It used to be Netzero, but when they made so the anti-ad hack would not work, I switched everybody. I hve had no problem with it, except recently when Spinway went out of business and they had to redo all of their access numbers, but that has been fixed.

I swear by the old tried and true www.juno.com. (http://www.juno.com.) They have a premium service on sale right now for $4.95 a month but I`ve got my parents on the free service and they have had no problems with it at all. Can`t tell you about the local access numbers, though. You`ll have to log on and find out. Gary

I have had wavering results with the Free ISP deals. Both FreeWWWeb and AltaVista folded their ISP service, my luck, I was using them at the time http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif
I would recommend NetZero, Juno...or any other resource that HAS ADS. even though this may be annoying and sometimes intimidating you know the company can support itself.
Best of luck,
Michael

NetZero may be frustrating at times, but I still use it after about three years of variable results. Apparently, the people who run it aren't interested in user feedback, or a discussion like this would be accessible directly from their homepage.
What I'd tell them if they were listening is that their programmers are missing the boat by not opening banner-ad links in a new window every time. It would be a lot less aggravation for the user to close the unwanted extra windows than to have critical programs interrupted in the middle of an on-line game or a web-page editing session.
At 50.6Kbaud, NZ sounds pretty fast, but don't forget that a significant portion of the data being transferred goes to updating the banner ads.
Lately, they post a friendly-sounding message to the effect that it is possible to click on banner ads. They used to say what they really mean, which is "You better click on an ad within 60 seconds or you'll be unceremoniously dumped off line."
Even when you sign out in an orderly fashion, your system will, most likely, be crashed in the process. I'm not sure whom to blame for that; is NZ's fault or Bill Gates's fault. Anyway, I've grown accustomed to rebooting after every on-line session.
A few months ago the reminder to click on an ad came up once per hour. Today, it's been appearing every 20 minutes. What can a person accomplish in an editing session in 20 minutes? If the window you're working gets commandeered by the ad link, you're back to square one. Sometimes you can recover if you saved your work to the clipboard before clicking on the ad, but it still really cuts into your time if you have to recover every 20 minutes.
If I got paid minimum wage for the time I've wasted on those **** banner ads, it would probably pay the cost of a REAL ISP! Guess I better get one of those things where they pay you for your time. What do they call those things? Oh, yea. They J word.
