It has to be a USB modem because of space issues. I'm looking for a fast cost-effective stable modem. Should I get the Diamond SupraMax V.92 USB, the Diamond SupraExpress USB, or Zoom Mini-model V.92 3090 USB? I read somewhee the SupraMax uses up lot of CPU resources. Is this so for anyone that has used this modem.

I did use the SupraMax USB, and yes, it uses much more resources than an internal software modem. The two others I don't know.

I don't recommend any USB modems. Take a look at my "home page" if you doubt my opinion. (http://www.usb.org/forums/retail/webboard.html) Do you have a free serial (Com) port?

My terrible Gateway computer which I regret that I bought has no serial port and if I want to add an internal modem it has be a half-height card to fit and I don't know of a modem that is half-height. So I'm stuck with USB if want to change modems.

I would get the Zoom modem then. If you want to get an idea of the veracity of USB modems, notice that U.S. Robotics doesn't even offer one. They don't want to support it.

I found one source for AMR modems - Smartlink. Shop for one here. (http://192.216.185.10/mwave/ProdMD-MWA.hmx?UID=&CID=&updepts=MDM&DNAME=%3Cb%3EModems%3C%2Fb%3E&Back=ProdMD-MWA.hmx?) They are so cheap that you owe it to yourself to try one.
