My PIII is connected to a external modem.
When I have the modem dial I get the dialtone and the phone rings but it never connects.
I then cancel the connection and do it all over again. And time it then connects.
This may sound stupid but it is extremely irritating. How can I solve this?

Is this consistant? Does it happen every time? Do you have another modem to try? The problem may be the phone line.

Can be many things, but the 2 I suspect more are : ISP's lines are full, and your call goes through all the callbox and doesn't find a free one.

Or, as one of my ex ISPs did, your ISP could have set their modem to answer only after many rings. If you dial, wait hang-up, redial, you can get on the same modem and the ring count continues.

I once noticed I always connected on the 2nd ring of the 2nd call. My ISP had set their modems to answer after 8 rings, and my first call waited 6 rings before timing out. The way around this is to set the ABORT CALL IF NOT CONNECTED WITHIN X MIN in your dial-up settings.
