If so, maybe you could help me. I am running Windows 98SE.
I installed a new MagicSpin 52X CDROM drive in my son's computer.
When we put a CD in it, is freezes the machine for a few seconds and then rejects the CD. The drive light never comes on but it does open and close the drive door.
What I want to know: What is the driver your CDlists? Mine shows up in Control Panel/System is a BCD F520D CDRom. I'm wondering if it's the right driver. Also, any suggestions what might be wrong? The drive is brand new. I'm pretty sure I have the Master/Slave settings correct. I'm not quite as confident in the cable but it also has an HP writer on the same cable and it works fine. Biglaker

I have an I/O magic CDRW and DVD, both on the same cable and they work fine. Try using the I/O as the only device on the cable and see what happens.
A CDROM doesn't need a driver. The info that's displayed it just the real model of the drive. I/O Magic doesn't really make their products either. My DVD comes up as a LiteOn. I'm not sure about my burner.
Also, try the drive by itself in DOS (using a Win98 startup disk). If it still doesn't work, then you have a hardware problem.

Thanks for the reply. I planned to experiment with the cables. I was doing some troubleshooting- I believe it may have been the troubleshooter in Start/help and it said that I should verify that Windows 98 loaded the correct driver so I wanted to check that the correct driver was loaded. It seems that Windows 98 usually identifies the driver specific to the brand of CDrom and that's why I was interested in what driver Windows 98 was using on someone else's machine. The driver that Windows 98 identified on my son's machine didn't seem to be one that sounded like I/O MagicSPin. If you're running Win98, could you tell me which one you have?
I will have to experiment with my son's cables- he has the drive on the same cable as his HPwriter and he also has two hard drives, one hooked to his primary port (ATA33 hard drive) and the other hooked to a Promise Card (ATA 100). So what I guess we could try is connecting the new drive to the same cable as ATA33 hard drive. Biglaker

Here are my Win98 drivers:
CDWRITER IDE1610
LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163
As I said earlier, Windows9x doesn't actually use a model specific driver, it just uses one or two generic drivers(thats what they have standards for) and the name in device manage is just the model name that is stored in the drive's ROM. The same with harddrives. There's no special driver for a Western Digital drive of a Maxtor drive.
From what I understand in your last post, you have the CDROM hooked up to a Promise ATA100 card. Why is that? Usually CD drives are only ATA33 or less and should be hooked up to the motherboard. Are any other devices hooked up the controller card? Do they show up in Windows? If you motherboard has any free IDE connectors (hopefully on the secondary channel) then you should try the CDROM on the motherboard. If it only has one free connector on the HD's cable, then try setting the jumpers accordingly and plug it in there. I think there is another post on this site about someone having a similiar with a CDROM that is connected to a controller card not being shown in Windows. Perhaps the controller card only supports ATA devices(Harddrives) and not ATAPI devices(CDROMS, Zip drives)?

Sorry I was not clear in my last post - and I have a new development.
The ATA 33 harddrive is connected to the primary port on the m/b
The HP writer and the MagicSpin CD-Rom are connected to the secondary port on the m/b
The ATA 100 drive is connected to one of the ports on the Promise Card.
The new development is that now my son's HP writer stopped working AND there is a yellow exclamation point over the secondary controller. I guess you were right in that I've got to experiment with either a different location, maybe a cable issue, or try different jumper settings than what I now have. Gotta go check this out as my son wants to get back to his game playing.

Drivers are not required in XP. If you mean the DVD viewer program, you have to buy that.

I would try connecting the Hp writer on the primary cable with the HD, making the Hp a slave. And connect the new CD-ROM as master on the Secondary cable. As for the Promise card you might have to reinstall the drivers that came with it.
And is the PSU in good shape?
Good Luck :)
