Keep an eye on Hostbet.com. Once in a while they give out free accounts (username.hostbet.net) and they might do it again soon. 100mbs web space, 1 mysql database, ftp access, site control panel, email, 2gb bandwidth.

I use Tripod. (http://www.tripod.lycos.com/)
They have only one small banner at the top of the page, when viewing pictures from a file like a Thumbnail page there is no banner. :)
There is one pop up that flashes to your taskbar when you first open the site. I hate those pop ups that stay on the screen!
They give you 50 mb! But they don't allow hot linking.

At my training center where I teach internet technologies, I show my students where to find free web hosting. So far, the best place to go is www.brinkster.com (http://www.brinkster.com/) .
I point all my students here to upload their website projects. Brinkster has absolutely no ads anywhere that pops up on your site. There are numerous restrictions of course so you'll want to read the terms of service and privacy agreements. But its not a bad choice for "free" web hosting, no ads and an allotment of 30MB for you.
