Hollywood really has done a number on a perfectly good and respected nic-name.

Hacker

I would be proud of myself if one day I could truely call myself a Hacker.

I Hack as much as I can on SysOpt.

To learn what the true sence of the name is, go to this site:

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Circuit/9147/tippages/beemerswindowstips/beemerswindowstips.htm

and click on the "Hacker or Cracker" text.

You tell me. Do many of us fit the term "Hacker"?
I think so!

I hope everyones terminology improves. Spread this page around to friends and lets see if we can correct this wrong out of respect for our forefathers of the Internet.

Cheers!

Being..or attempting to be..a hacker IMHO..is a good thing..it's all about taking apart and putting together the way you like it..getting to the guts so to speak..then writing somthing that suits your purpose...I think Hollywood has confused hacker..and cracker.
..in a general sense some people that are members here could be called hackers in a way..not me though..LOL

No I did not read it, I found the background annoying when trying to read so I did not bother to read it. I did read your post though.

I just posted the proper definition of what a hacker is.

I have only one comment about Beemer's comparison page: alt.2600 is my favorite newsgroup! It makes for fun reading. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

BTW, I'm surprised anyone even knows what UseNet is anymore. Most people know it exists, but few actually use it.

I think only the true hackers are in it for curiosity, rest are there for fame or just because they can (go through 2600.com archives). People like Vladimir Lenvin gave people a wrong impression and labled us as "thieves" or "a danger to society".

I myself never destroy anything (that would get me in trouble, heh),just do it through curiosity.

btw... i don't use linux because i don't know how to but i still think that Linus Torvald is one hell of a hacker. he took something apart and made it better than it was...

Nope but I just looked through Secret Service documents, read about a supposed cracker that went to jail, and found algorythims to play with. Neat site.

Yes, unfortunately too many lamers insist on claiming to be hackers when they're not.

Luring the naive to a website thatautomatically downloads a worm or trojan to steal passwords is not "hacking".

Sending a trojan or virus thru email is not "hacking".

Using a script to invade another's computer to get personal or other info is not "hacking".

It's just the lamers, script kiddies, and those who are uninformed who think it is.
